Political disturbance in Ireland threatens bailout
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Just recently, Irish Prime Minister announced that his country would receive a bailout from European Union and the International Monetary Fund. Ireland´s struggling financial system will be provided with about $140 billion. Experts from both EU and the IMF arrived in Dublin about a week ago to assess how big the financial aid package should be in order to prevent banks´ default. As EU officials stated the bailout “is warranted to safeguard financial stability in the EU and euro area.” Ireland will be required to follow strict rules and conditions if it wants to draw loans. "Loans are based on strict conditions. If Ireland does not stick to those condi! tions, there will be no more payments," said Juergen Stark, member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank. He also expressed his personal opinion that ireland should raise its corporate taxes, which have been a subject of much criticism from other EU countries. "Ireland has further room to move in budget consolidation," Stark said. "In my opinion, it should keep the playing field level in taxation." However, new political development in Ireland could threaten the bailout. Prime Minister Brian Cowen is battling not only the opposition who demand an election before Christmas but also disturbances within his own party. Some members of his Fianna Fail party request that he quit as he lied to the country about secret bailout negotiations. About week ago Brian Cowen claimed that rumours about Ireland seeking a financial aid package were “ill-informed and inaccurate” only to admit few days later that the government had been negotiating with the EU because ! it is in dire need of bailout money to save debt-loaded banks.! However , at first a vote on the 2011-14 budget should be carried out successfully, scheduled to be held December 7, as it is essential in order to prevent "the financial bush fire concerning Ireland ... becomes a European-wide forest fire," as EU monetary and financial affairs commissioner Olli Rehn said.

NY Representative Charles Rangel. Guilty for breaking rules of the House
by Milota Sidorova

If you ask anyone about the check and the transparency of politicians the answers will be probably negative or ironic. This social class is still standing on some kind of platform, enjoying the aura of untouchable. To put it straight – politician are not trusted if it comes to ethic, tax paperwork and annual income disclosures. And it certainly is a peak of the ice when speaking of Rep. Charles Rangel, 80 yrs Democratic Senator who has been pleaded guilty for breaking House rules. Rangel who is the oldest senior member of the party has been facing a series of allegations of ethics violations for more than two and half years. Back in 2008 he was accused for accepting t! ravels in the Caribbean, covered by corporations – the jury found him guilty and required to pay back all those expenses. Rangel was however accused from more serious actions – listing annual tax disclosures, using more residences (appartments) in New York while he was living in Washinghton DC and used this residence as a tax adress. He was also accused from raising money for a public policy institute in his name and not disclosing rental incomes from a real-estate property in the Dominican Republic. Rangel has been leaving some of his positions gradually, for instance Ways and Means and faced final jury last days. He was pleaded guilty of 11 from 13 counts and he is probably going to lose some of his House privileges and will be fined. Rangel opposed that he didn't have proper defence, since his team left him after he failed to pay another $1 million to them. Rangel was defending himself on his own, but it brought no success. So far media didn't report what kin! d of consequences would fall upon his head. Well, one's sure, ! Rangel i s neither the first one, not the last one, but anytime such shame falls upon a head of such powerful person, it is a good sign for the society. However, playing a martyr and the lamb of God can be tricky...

Will Murkowski succeed in her write-in campaign?
by Zuzana Zelenakova

As Republican Lisa Murkowski struggles to succeed in her write-in campaign to sae her seat in Senate the whole country watches. Counting of the last votes in Alaska began Wednesday. Some of 92,000 write-in ballots have already been counted and some are still waiting to be counted. The write-in votes represent about 40 percent of the total vote and if they were cast in favour of Murkowski, she would gain a significant lead over her oponent Joe Miller. Republican Miller and his team are watching closely the process of counting ballots challenging every variation or mispelling of Lisa Murkowski´s name. However, Alaska´s lieutenant governor Craig Campbell stated that! the votes are valid as long as the intent is clear. His decision was followed by Joe Miller filing a lawsuit. He requests that all write-in ballots with misspelles name of Lisa Murkowski are declared as not valid. "This isn't supposed to be a penmanship test," responded Murkowski spokesman John Tracy. A judge decided Wednesday that the count is still on while Miller´s case is being considered. Murkowski, who has a chance to become the first US Senate candidate to win as a write-in, dedicated much of her campaign to get people familiar with the correct spelling of her name saying that is the way how to ensure that the votes are counted. She closed many of her speeches by encouriging the crowds to spell her last name. Lisa Murkowski has critics even harsher than Joe Miller, for example the South Carolina senator Jim DeMint. "Rather than accepting defeat and working to unite Republicans behind Joe Miller, she has decided to put her own personal interests ahead of everyt! hing else," he stated back in September. Miller has considere! d her ru nning as a write-in candidate instead of supporting him as breaking her word.

Modern piracy
by Zivka Deleva

Piracy has big part from the history. It may be reasonable to assume that piracy has existed for as long as the oceans were plied for commerce. There were a lot of piracy groups that made impression and left their trace in history. Most popular of them are: Vikings from Scandinavia, Muslim pirates in Mediterranean sea, Barbary pirates in North Africa, pirates of the Caribbean in The Caribbean and many more. Piracy was back than a way of life, definitely strange way of life. Attacking ships every day, robbing them, taking lives being brutal. Living on the edge every day, taking a risk of hanging on a rope, in front of everyone being their entertainment of the day as a punis! hment for their act. Today maybe we think it is all history and it is written only in the books and in the movies. Unfortunately piracy still exists in some parts of the world like Somalia and The Strait of Malacca and it is called modern piracy. These piracy activities are causing a lot of problems in the water transportation and attempts against it are taken. International ships equipped with helicopters patrol the waters where pirate activity has been reported, but the area is very large. Some ships are equipped with anti-piracy weaponry such as a sonic device that sends a sonic wave out to a directed target, creating a sound so powerful that it bursts the eardrums and shocks pirates. Putting piracy like this, it’s not so fun any more.

Repulicans Crused Democrats
by Zivka Deleva

The democrats suffered a severe setback in the mid-term election. Republicans captured 60 seats in the House to take power there, but the Senate remains in Democratic hands. Up for election were all 435 seats in the House (the lower chamber of Congress), 37 of the 100 seats in the Senate, governorships of 37 of the 50 states and all but four state legislatures. In the House, Republicans have gained 60 seats so far with 11 Democratic districts -- Kentucky's 6th, Georgia's 2nd, Illinois's 8th, Michigan's 9th, Texas's 27th, Arizona's 7th and 8th, New York's 25th, California's 11th and 20th and Washington's 2nd. Geographically, Republicans crushed Democrats in the Rust Belt -- ! picking up five seats in Ohio, five seats in Pennsylvania, three seats in Illinois and two seats in Michigan. Historically, the Republican gains mark the biggest midterm election seat swap since 1938 when Democrats lost 71 House seats. In the Senate, Republicans made solid gains but will remain in the minority, they gained 6 seats. In governors' races, Republicans have netted seven seats with seven other races in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon and Vermont not yet called. What happened? Were the voters angry, frustrated or they were only disappointed from the government and the president Mr. Barak Obama. Anyway the results showed that lots of them changed their mind and if the democrats wants to keep leading that country they need to make some serious changes in their action plan and future organization. Otherwise Republicans will crush them.

Obamas in India
by Milota Sidorova

Just few days after loosing domestic Congressional elections, U.S. president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama set out on Asian trip. During 10 days he is expected to visit India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan. The trip started in India and although it hasn't been seen as too important visit in particular, media turned their attention on it. President Obama however portrayed himself as respectful and tolerant visitor, sometimes even much too familiar with Indian children. However, this all was the part of the play. He was escorted to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the palatial residence where he paid a visit and suggested that U.S.-India parthership would be one of the ̶! 2;defining“ partnership of the 21st century. Well it seems to be quite common phrase, since there are more „defining“ partnerships for the U.S. Let's just mention vice president Joe Biden's quote on Israel as„no such friend“ or surprisingly open ties with Russia or China. Obamas then visited a memorial to Mohanas Gandhi where they removed their shoes before putting large white wreath on the flower tablet. Obama was later on about to meet privately with Indian Prime Minister Manmoham Singh and speak in Indian Parliament. President famous by his rhetoric didn't escape some really honest comments – after one Indian student commented U.S. eletions and Democratic loss with the quote: „It seems that the American people have asked for a change“. Obama however agreed that people have decided on their own and vented their anger, disappointment about crisis on politics. But he also added he wouldn't skip his plans to some policy chang! es, spending on energy and education. During the public meetin! g at St. Xavier College, a Jesuit institution where students waited for hours outside for him in the heat he again faced another harsh question – why was America so supportive to Pakistan, if all the world was labeling it „a terrorist“ country. Pakistan has been blamed for lack of efforts in preventing and investigation of Mumbai terrorist attacks. Obama avoided direct answer by stating, Pakistani knew about internal powers within the country, but also said ties with Pakistan were for America as important as the partnership with India. Presidential couple will spend Monday night in New Delhi and then move towards Indonesia.

Republicans win over Democrats
by Zivka Deleva

Obama is sad. He failed in his country. His friend from the Democratic party have a lots of reasons to be disappointed. But, only one reason is the most important. On the long awaited mid-term elections in the Congress in the United States of America, all kinds of tolls and surveys are being made for the vox populi to be heard. The votes showed that Republicans are more popular than the governing Obama's Democrats. The elections were signed for 435 seats in the White House. The biggest critics toward Obama and his administration in the last period was the huge spending for campaigns and firing a lot of people. This failure is huge for Democrats. It was not so directly ! for Obama, but it will certainly not affect his policy in the next two years. No matter how laic you are in the political sciences, even a child can predict that it is going to be impossible for the Peace Nobel Prize winner to win another mandate. American people were the most disappointed from Obama for the weak economical strategy in the first half of his time. And off course, when are people the angriest, if not when hungry? The United States of America's rate of unemployment has reached to the historical percentage of almost 10 percent, which is a figure not known for this giant. A lot of people today regret for Obama and if they could only turn back time, they would safe their vote for someone else. Republicans needed extra 40 seats to have the House's majority which belonged to them four years ago.

Districts that may result
by Milota Sidorova

Update on the U.S. Congressional election 2010. According to some, this event will rewrite the political map of the country. Let's get a short review of the most watched states and districs. The price is about 100 seats in the House and the battle is supposed to be very tight – these district may result. 2nd and 9th districts in Indiana. 9th was very tricky for both parties in the past and although was Democratic in 2006, during presidential campaign turned out to be Republican. Today there is a battle between Democrat Barron Hill that has according to polls lower score against his opponent. 2nd district was won by Obama presidential campaign in 2008 and seems to be m! ore Democratic even now. Georgia as the representant of the South seems to be more Republican. If compared with 2008, Obama got there around 43 percent and Democratic candidate Jim Marshall will face real tough night. 8th district is however consists of about 50 percent of African-American population, so it could be what Democrats might need. 11th and 5th district in Virginia may be crucial as well – according to media it is one of the wealthiest district strongly backing Bush tax cuts for rich citizen and therefore may not be supportive to Democrat Gerald Connolly. Obama however did it with 57 percent in 2008. 5th district is supposed to be Republican victory tonight. 15th Ohio's district should be Democratic embodied with Mary Jo Kilroy, but 16th is supposed to be more Republican and John McCain won it in 2008. Duel is expeved also in Colorado's 4th and 7th district and while 4th should be a lousy experience for Democrat Betsy Markety, 7th should taste better for ! Democrat Ed Perlmutter. Republicans aim to get 10 seats from D! emocrats in the Senate, but three are already Democratic – Indiana, North Dakota and Arkansas. Wisconsin looks more Republican, but other six are balancing at the edge of the knife. For now, for few more hours.

Niekoľko poznámok na margo volieb v Spojených štátoch.
by Milota Sidorova

Američania dnes volia guvernérov a senátorov do najvyššieho zhromaždenia – Kongresu. Podľa očakávania, by dnes k urnám malo prísť obzvlášť mnoho voličov. Repulikánom podľa odhadu stačí 40 kresiel nato, aby získali dolnú komoru a výrazne zvrátili zákonodarný proces vo svoj prospech. Podľa očakávania, väčšinu v 437 člennej komore rozhodne asi stovka kresiel. Niektorí politológovia hovoria o t! akzvanom personifikovaní politiky – podľa tejt! o te 3;rie ľudia prestávajú voliť podľa náplne a programu strany, ale volia podľa toho, akí kandidáti sú nasadení. A teda rozhoduje hlavne imidž toho, ktorého kandidáta.

Few Thoughts on the U.S. elections 2010.
by Milota Sidorova

Day D for America. Day D for the U.S. November 2nd is finally the day Congressional elecctions U.S. citizen are voting governors and Senators. According to media and observers many are expected to come. Democrats are dividing the country, well what seems to be really interesting feature of 2010 election is the strategy of both parties. While Democrats were trying to re-establish their image and speed up at least some core promises of President Barack Obama, such as health reform, tax ease and job creation, Republicans set on the easier strategy – criticize. Of course the battle of both Congressional Houses is expected, but the mood all around is just interesting. Dem! ocrats do anything to decrease loss and Republicans are just waiting. Democrats that won Presidential chair, Senate and House are fighting for the future politics, if Republicans get another 40 seats, the House may be theirs. The battle over 100 of 437 seats is tight. It almost seems that it is not the battle over the Congres, but as many things in American history, also these elections have been transformed into the battle of heroes. President Barack Obama on the one side and what seems so ironical, no one on the second side. According to several observers, Republicans didn't chose any visible and equal counter person who could be embodiment of their policy. So for now it seems that Republicans are dependent on people. If they get angry enough to vote against Democrats, then they can vote for anyone from Republicans. However, agenda of both parties has been lost during the campaign.
