Presidential fight
by Claudia Sonea

Presidential elections are putting in move the candidates, if democratic Barack Obama announced on Thursday that he managed to raise a record of 32 million dollars in January, as he competed with Hillary Clinton on Tuesday for votes, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger praised Arizona Senator John McCain thus offering advantages to the Republican front-runner for the next week's crucial contests in some 22 states. The famous movie star, currently the governor of California, presented most favorably McCain's environmental an economical platform and also his leadership. He decided to support McCain after former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani quitted the race on Wednesday because he did not manage to make an impact. Due to the fact that Schwarzenegger's state has a lot of delegates for the party's national convention in September, the Republican nominee is more likely to contest the November elections and become the new President. However, McCain's campaign was affected by the heated televised debate he had at the Reagan Presidential Library outside Los Angeles, when senator Romney accused the his campaign of waging a dirty tricks campaign by implying that Romney had previously advocated a phased withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. At the other pole, the Democratic race is between Obama, 46, and Clinton, 60, after former senator John Edwards retired on Wednesday. Campaign organizers revealed that the Illinois senator brought in some 32 million dollars in funds from some 650,000 people only in January. Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe confirmed the figures, while a spokesman for the former first lady and New York senator said that what counted was how people voted. The two rivals will meet face to face later on Thursday in a debate in the Hollywood Boulevard hall where the Academy Awards ceremonies have been held since 2001. Clinton at a public appearance in her old hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas on Wednesday, said voters in New Hampshire, Michigan, Nevada and Florida supported her not only with their hearts, but also with their heads. Both Obama and Clinton must keep an eye on their possible Republican opponent in the November election, with McCain now as the favourite. According to the national polls the fight will be tight.

Schwarzenegger will endorse McCain
by Zuzana Moravcova

Senator John McCain joined Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday to promote the California governor's November ballot initiatives. They are going to appear at a news conference after touring a Los Angeles-based solar energy company and the governor will make his endorsement official, his senior aides confirmed. At the Oakland event, the crowd seemed to be enthusiastic as an audience at a game show, applauding at all the right spots, frequently nodding their head in agreement, and chanting "four more years" as Schwarzenegger arrived. Steve Shcmidt, a senior McCain adviser who managed Schwarzenegger's 2006 campaign, said "Governor Schwarzenegger is an exceptional governor and we are honored that he has decided to endorse Senator McCain, and look forward to the event tomorrow." McCain, a possible candidate for U.S. president in 2008, is running strongly ahead of all three rivals in California. He said he had always favored town hall meetings open to the public, adding that some especially noisy dissenters had occasionally been ejected. "The benefit of an open town hall meeting is one that you get to hear a lot of different views, and two it has credibility," he said. After having appeared with the governor earlier in the day at a Burbank hotel, McCain, who has fought for campaign finance reform, said Schwarzenegger's extensive fund raising "played by the rules of the game." He continued: "Do I like the game? No. But for him to tie one hand behind his back, I would not think would be particularly appropriate." Schwarzenegger is not going to make an endorsement in the GOP primary. "It doesn't help me, and it doesn't help the state of California." He is now up for re-election next year He is fighting an uphill battle on his favored measures in the special election that he called for next month.

Edwards steps aside
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Wednesday, New Orleans, Johhny Reid Edwards ends White House bid. He ended his campaign with the belief that "one America" would be finally united under a Democratic president. Simultaneously, he has submitted this goal to two remaining Democratic candidates, Hillary Rodman Clinton and Barack Obama. "Two Americas", a phrase Edwards uses very often, represents one for haves and the other for the have-nots. His dream was to unify this two Americas into one Democratic nation. Candidacy of this big personality was also in compliance with his dream, as it was based on ending poverty and inequality in economics. Edwards is experienced in both poverty and wealth, because he lived on both sides. He was born in Seneca, S.C., and his parents worked all their lives in textile mill. He spent most of his youth in the countryside of North Carolina and was the first one of his family to attend college and then university. Edwards's political career began 10 years ago in 1998 as a Southerner for the Senate and went on with his first presidential bid in 2004. Now he ran as a liberal with a strong opposition to the war. He is also voicing reduction in emissions that contribute to global warming and was the first to present universal health care plan. The former North Carolina senator began his candidacy 13 months earlier at the same place, where he also ended it, due to seeming contradictions and personal drama. Elizabeth Edwards, his wife, said laughing: "'So, Dad's going to be home tomorrow and the day after and the day after." As we can see, there are some people, who are happy about his decision to end his presidential bid.

The Americans are wondering
by Jana Passova

This year it is going to be 56th consecutive quadrennial election for president and vice president of the United States. It is still time enough to the United State presidential elections 2008 but every party has been working really hard for a long time. The USA has three main candidates: Hillalry Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain. There are made a lot of surveys and discussions of the winner every day. The most basic reason is that people expect a lot of changes from the new American president and every body is wondering who will be the winner this time. The Americans are not satisfied with the situation, which is here now. The progress in the United States is not really good and it is getting worse. People are not satisfied with inflation, high of interest rates and taxes !etc. But a lot of The Americans are still optimists. They hope for better times like every time every person before election. Mostly young people believe in improvement. The thing is, it needs to be done quickly. Mainly supporters of Clinton and Obama believe that one of these two candidates can change the situation. The question is who of possible candidates is able to be the one who can help & a person connected with Washington or the outsider? Politics think about insider. On the other side is a voice of people. The Americans are nearly half and half about this point. Anyway a little bit less of them believe it could be someone from outside. This question could not be answered now and everybody has to wait till the date of election, which is going to be on Novembe4, 2008.

Thailand has a new Prime Minister
by Paula Puskarova

Thailand has a new Prime Minister! And it is a woman! A new-mannered woman called Ms. Samak Sundaravej who is gonna lead new 6-party-government. Well, good luck, brave girl! Even almost the 60 % of the Thai people do "believe that the government won't be able to complete its term because it is a coalition of a small parties," said Noppadon Kanikar, director of the research center. Samak wants a new, changed Thailand, and less violence in the south, but she is the one who is said to force her staff to hold to their noses as a sign that they refer to her! She doesn't seem very conciliatory. In fact, she does have a slightly resemblance to an iron lady. At this point, I think, it has some kind of a reason to compare her to her "forerunner" as the head of the government - Thaksin Shinawatra. Well, at least, Thaksin was clever enough to rake together quite some money to buy his own football club. And it is not just a poor, funny playing team, but quite a catch called Manchester City football club. Good for him! Seems that he could give some lessons to Samak how to make a fortune and still be popular among people. He started his career as a policeman and when he ascended to power 5 years ago, he was well educated - He took the role of a "good father", who can handle any situation that occurs. He was quite famous with his very "gently" and clearly put orders: " Put up or shut up". Anyway, he succeeded to bring Thailand into the WTO on the 11th January 2007. It is just a terrible pity that he did not forget to behave as a policeman and embarked his military policy based on the knowledge: "If a special situation occurs, you still have the army to handle it". Maybe, Thailand is not ready for the full democracy, the country is still struggling to find its place in the international community & both as a culture and as an economy. As for my personal piece of advice to Thaksin, he should have watched his family first! His fall is a wonderful example how not to support all your family's actions because they can bring you down and what's more, rout you to an exile. Anyway, considering a new Prime Minister, time is gonna change in the Thai society and we all will witness that.

Thailand has a new prime minister
by Katarina Jankejova

Samak Sundaravej was elected as a new prime minister in Thailand on Monday,28 January 2008. The People Power party (PPP) leader received 310 votes while the Democrat party's nominee Mr Abhisit Vejjajiva received only 163 votes, paving the way for Mr. Samak to become Thailand's 25th prime minister. Mr Samak's win was expected, given the majority support from the PPP-led coalition bloc. He will lead a coalition of parties that together control about 65 percent of the seats in the House of Representative. After the elections he said to reporters : "Nothing will change in my life. There will be no celebration over my appointment." Born in June 1935 in the Thai capital, Bangkok, Samak Sundaravej comes from an aristocratic family. He graduated with a law degree from the prestigious Thammasat University and entered politics in his thirties, first as a member of the Democrat Party. Well connected to the military, Samak became head of its renegade right-wing faction. In the 1976 General Elections he defeated Kukrit Pramoj and was made Deputy Interior Minister in the cabinet of Seni Pramoj. He quickly became prominent for arresting several left-wing activists. Following the coup of October 6, 1976, Samak became Minister of the Interior in the administration of Tanin Kraivixien, a palace-favoured anti-Communist with a reputation for honesty. Samak immediately launched a fanatical witch-hunt which saw hundreds of supposed leftists, many of whom were writers and other intellectuals, arrested. In 1979 Samak founded the right-wing Prachakorn Thai Party. Mr. Samak is known as a man of contradictions. He is under investigation for corruption in the procurement while he was governor of Bangkok during 2000 & 2004. If he is convicted, he would be barred from office. Having been elected prime minister, Mr Samak is now well placed to reward PPP voters with the return of Thaksin Shinawatra - but whether the military will tolerate that is another question entirely. Amongst voters, as well, he remains a polarising figure, with many concerned about his famously pugnacious manner. Most analysts are predicting a rocky few months ahead for Thailand. Samak Saundaravej Thailand's new prime minister
by Svetlana Burdova

Bankok, Jan 28. Thailand's House of Representatives voted leader Samak Sundaravej as the Tahailand's new prime minister. Thailand has completed a transition from military rule back to democracy. But analysts predict that this transition has not already been over. Samak, 72, was voted by 310 members of the 480-seat House of Representatives. Samak's rival was the 43-year-old Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the opposition Democrat Party. Mr. Samak beat Mr.Vejjajiva by 310 votes to 163. After the vote in Parliament, Samak wants the reporters to respect his privacy. "Nothing will change in my life," Samak said. "There will be no celebration over my appointment." All members took part in the voting. Three members, Samak, Abhisit and the house speaker, abstained. As the leader of the People Power Party, Samak will lead a coalition that together control about 65 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives. Despite Samak's victory, it is possible, that he will be replaced by someone else. The Thai media speculate on who can be another canditate for prime minister. "I think the Thaksin group will try to find a way to get rid of him over the next few months," Jon Ungpakorn, a former senator and democracy activist, said of Samak. "He was an asset in the election. He will be a liability as prime minister." This leaves the Democrat Party with 165 seats, as the only opposition party in the house. The voting for prime minister was originally expected for Friday but later dealyed to Monday. New cabinet line-up is expected to be announced in early February Samak is a blue-blooded member of the Thai elite and he graduated in law from one of the best universities in the country. Samak's grandfather reigned from 1851 to 1868. He king gave He family He last name, Sundaravej. Defeated Abhisit said that it has been time to move forward with a new government in which he and his party would have been in the opposition. "It is also time to install honest people who can work within the system so that we donj't get back into the past."

Dirty political games of China or how to take advantage of Africa`s poverty
by Silvia Zuberova

Kenya and China have signed six agreements signaling closer economic and technical cooperation between the two countries during a meeting held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing today between President Kibaki and his host President Hu Jintao.{http://search.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/results.pl?tab=av&q=Kenya%20and%20China&recipe=all&scope=all&edition=} Even though this sentence seems to be a simple news, there are hundreds of "secret" meanings behind it.Let`s make an effort to conceal it together. China and Kenya, two distant countries which try to support each other, that was my first impression reading the sentence above. If somebody is not informed enough about the political situation in the world,he or she will just read the next article in the paper. It may happen our reader realises some really sad facts -post electoral violence ,human rights violations, ethnical and tribal conflicts- -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8ZCFn8V1_U/, but the main thing stays unveiled. Why is China so interested in the current affairs of a poor agricultural country? Why does it criticises the democracy that has nothing to do with the tribal conflicts and cruelty all around Kenya? The answer is too obvious to believe. The world`s biggest state{more than 1 billion people live there} needs natural resources-oil,oil and oil- in which Kenya is rich enough.Certainly, the main reason should be hidden, that`s why we can read declarations like that above. The only goal of China is to influence the political situation in Kenya in order to exploit it`s natural "treasures".No matter what kind of tools it uses.As a matter of fact,Beijing devotes some money to the infrastucture, school system in Kenya to draw the attention to it`s "humanitarian mission " in Africa, meanwhile it exploits and ruins the economy and makes a huge benefit from the naivity of the leaders of Kenya. I wouldn`t be surprised ,if one day appeared a news saying that China provoked the fights after the elections in Kenya. What is more,it ensured weapons for the militant groups .I hope, that I am not right... The most influential enemy of China in this field is the western world represented mainly by the USA and the EU, who donate the African countries to alleviate the suffer of the inhabitants. On the one hand it` s a human plan,on the other hand it `s the duty of these countries to help after the long years of colonialism-opression is a better word- which meant a terrible era for the African continent. On the whole,China`s interest is to maintain and develop its connections with Africa{especially with Kenya},so it will critise the democracy in Africa and the West again and again.Nevertheless it is our obligation to resist against this pressure. To be honest, I don` t believe that the donations of the West or the "support" of China are sufficient. The African continent should be also an important player when deciding on its own future.Although there`s an immense need for financial help, we should teach Africa how to utilize from it`s natural and menthal resources, capabilities. In my opinion this is the only way to give a real chance for the "craddle of the mankind" to recover from his devastating problems.

Kennedy Says YES! To Obama
by Milota Sidorova

Edwards Kennedy's crowning of Obama snatches power back from the Clintons. Monday Jan 28, liberal lion Edward Kennedy denotes Barack Obama, a challenger in the presidential race 2008 as the inspirational heir to his slain brother John F. Kennedy. The popularity of the Kennedys, qualified as the best, that America could have, can heavily influence the public opinion. In his enthusiastic speech at American University, the Massachusetts senator signified his trust in Barack Obama, as a real possibility to turn the page of the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion. He claimed, that it was not the length of years in Washinghton, but the reach of our vision, the strength of our beliefs, and that 'rare quality of mind and spirit' that can call forth the best in our country and our people. Barrack Obama, the current senator Of Illinois started his political career at the bottom of the ladder as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1997, after his election to the Illinois Senate he maintained the policy focused on the rights of the poor and the marginalized. His 'electrifying' campaign is calling for the change and the real movement, while his opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton takes advantage of the traditional vows for the universal healthcare and benefits for military veterans. The Kennedys have left his neutral position after the former president attacked Obama. Moreover that day, Nobel prize-winning author, Tonni Morrison expressed his sympathies for the senator of Illinois, that can bring some shaking weeks to Clinton's campaign.

Successful Or Just Selected?
by Kamila Moravcikova

They were looking for new Prime Minister in Thailand recently. In some countries, selecting new head of a state is not so difficult. You just join the election and vote for your candidate (or someone who you think represents the "smaller evil") and wait if he/she had enough support. In Thailand (among other countries, of course) it is not that easy. It is not only about selecting the right one for this position, it's also about completing the transition from military to democracy. Even though it has been declared the country wants to respect the human rights, after many years of being afraid to express your "different" opinion it's a long-distance objective that needs much more time. Changing the government is just first step. And very complicated one. Is there any person that is able to lead Thailand? Anybody with proper education but also "simple people friendly"? Anybody whose past is not "spotted"? Is there anybody whose moral principles are strong enough? And is this person able to resist all the temptations that come along with power? Can this person fit to the political environment? Can this person defend the interests of Thailand? Who should be the right one? Or moreover, is there ever anybody like that? Finally, Samak Sundaravej is the new prime minister. Right now, it doesn't seem that everything's done as it's apparent that his government is going to be fragile. It's not only about being selected, it's about being successful.

The Presidential Elections 2008 - more predictible?
by Milota Sidorova

Sunday January 27 & the day expected all over the world. The political race in Russia is running its last week before finalizing the list of candidates. Despite of being a native country of communism, the Election 2008, scheduled to be held on March 2 may bring to Russia a one side looking contest. The present candidates Andrey Bogdanov, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Gennady Zyuganov, Mikhail Kasyanov and Dmitry Medvedev - do all of them stand a chance to be on the list? According to the opinion polls published on Tuesday by pollster VTSIOM, Dmitry Medvedev , a 42 years old Kremlin-backed candidate supported by incumbent president Vladimir Putin had more than 60 percent support, while Gennagy Zyuganov, the head of Communist party had only 6.1 percent. Zuyganov , whose campaign called for re-nationalisation of natural resources and the re-instalment of the death, has repeatedly complained about a pro-Kremlin slant in coverage on the main television stations. As Viadomosti newspapers claimed, he was seriously thinking of giving up the race. His weak appearances in this elections, may later leave him ambiguous and vulnerable to maintain a position of a head of Communistic party. Vladimir Zhirinovsky, nationalist Deputy Speaker of the State Duma and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia had a support of 7.5 percent in the last poll. Ex-prime minister Mikhail Kasayanov's rates points to the only one percent as well as the fifth candidate, the leader of the Democratic Party of Russia, Andrei Bogdanov.

Early voting in US presidential elections
by Tatiana Hadarova

Apart from the question who to vote must americans nowadays also consider another issue: when to vote. The election day, which is set on the 5, February is approaching and many of the states and presidential candidates are trying to use their voters hesitation and to allow them to vote in advance of election day. But according to american style of election, in which is important how many votes would each candidate gets in every state in the primaries, can be this possibility of early voting quiet risky, especially for voters. They are affraid that their votes could be in early voting wasted for unsuccessful candidate. „In the election like this, when the fortunes of candidates seem to be falling and raising daily, that tends to lead people to wait a little later," said Brook Thompson, a state elections coordinator. „Some don't want to vote for somebody who might fall of the wagon" he said, „they want to see who they think will be stronger against the opponent." Many states and candidates use this possibility and try to persuade people. For exemple Democrat candidates All Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton starts their campaign int the north of California, which typically has the highest number of early voters. Also Rudy Giuliani didn't miss the chance and rushed himself to arrive to Florida before his rivals, where he was trying to convince people by plucky proclamations:"I tell you what, before they even get here to campaign how about you go to vote for me?" As we can see, the battle for presidency in US is though and candidates use agressive and hazardous tactics. But how about poor voters who are in this campaign hardly „hammered"?

Woman bids to lead Paraguay
by Monika Stefanakova

Paraguay's ruling party on Monday nominated a former education minister seeking to become Paraguay's first female leader as its presidential candidate, ending a month-long dispute over a primary election result. If elected in the April balloting, Blanca Ovelar would become the country's first woman head of state and the third woman elected president in South America in recent years. Women now lead Argentina and Chile. She is an academic, educator and mother of three who served as the minister of education and culture before she stepped down last year. However, her chief rival for the nomination, former Vice President Luis Castiglione, vowed to pursue his legal challenge. If her candidacy withstands the internal test, Ovelar probably would confront a pair of popular opposition leaders who have declared their intention to challenge the Colorado Party's hegemony in the general elections. Contesting the Colorado Party's longtime domination are two populist candidates . Fernando Lugo, a former Roman Catholic bishop dubbed the ‘'Bishop of the Poor'', who has won backing from indigenous and impoverished Paraguayans. The other is Lino Oviedo, a charismatic former general who is back on the national scene after serving a prison term for plotting a coup. The Colorado Party has held power in Paraguay for 60 years. Paraguay, a landlocked tropical nation of almost 7 million people. The current president is Nicanor Duarte Frutos, but he must step down this year because of a limit to five-year term. If Blanca Ovelar wins, she would be the third woman president in South America, joining Argentine President Cristina Fernandey de Kirchner and Michelle Bachelet of Chile.

Serbian election dilemma
by Lenka Filipova

Presidential election in Serbia is coming soon and Serbs are forced to choose between two evils, e. i. whether to vote for nationalist Tomislav Nikolic (sympathizing with Russia) or for a liberal President Boris Tadic (preferring the West). The first round has already taken the place, putting Nikolic ahead with 40 percent of votes and pro-western Tadic as second with 35.4 percent. The second round happened yesterday and the third run-off is planned on February 3rd. Fortunately, both candidates strongly oppose the breakaway of Kosovo as it has been expected just after the second vote round. This issue seems to be the most significant factor for Serbs. It has been proclaimed by analysts that more than 61 percent Serbs went for Sunday's election. This is attributed to the importance of historical Kosovo to Serbs and mainly Albanian for whom it is an issue of independence. Analyst Zoran Stojiljkovic said that it would require a "maximum mobilization by both candidates". As Tadic is leading only slightly the tough "battle" is expected. People will have to make difficult, and what is more, really crucial decision whether to become part of Europe or be against it. There have been some doubts of Russian baking due to the fact that Serbia has never really had a close relationship with Russia since the Soviet Union. But this has changed as countenance over Kosovo has joined them with the feeling of Slavic brotherhood. Hence, there is necessity for both candidates to attract people with job and security promises as well as maintenance of Kosovo. The rest is left on people whether they will show their resentment to EU or they will express their will to be a member of EU development

Fight for the lead in Florida
by Daniela Simkova

The presidential race turned to Florida on Sunday. Recent voters John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are fighting over the lead in Florida. The presidential sprint for the winning in the national primary in February have then begun with a chaos of a greater extend. The presidental race have made some difficult issues for the candidates. Rudy Guiuliani indicted John McCain from never running a government. He said: „When you have that executive experience, you have to make decisions and decisions have consequences. ...Some of my opponents maybe don't have that same fervor and that same understanding." Other indictment was remarked by Mr. Romney to Mr. Giuliani, when he said, that Mr. Giuliani „spent his life working in the public sector, in the governmental sector." This knowledge made him think that Mr. Giuliani doesn't have to understand the system of economy. All the indictments were to launche the race in the getting the lead in Florida. All the candidates have already begun their media coverage and this bottle of expressions will only encourage them to make as big election coverage as needed. For instance, John McCain spoke to the reporters and also plans to make his own TV ads in the country. Mitt Romney did TV interviews and Rudy Giuliani had a couple of events endorsing his political campaign.

Clinton fighting for voters by talking about Oboma's imperfections
by Petra Calovkova

The upcoming presidential election in United States is drawing nearer and that brings along the rising pressure on the candidates. Hillary Clinton has started to concentrate more on her biggest opponent in her fight for voters. Her strategy seems to be based on showing people all the deficiencies that she is able to bring up against Senator Barack Oboma. At the moment he possibly have around two times more people willing to vote for him then she does. But political strategists are emphasizing that it is not of a big help for her to concentrate on what everything is negative about her opponent, because that will not change mind of his voters in such a short time period before election. Even worse for her can be that it can have the opposite effect and harm her instead. But Senator Hillary Clinton has obviously different opinion. Instead of being rather careful in this issue, she is even adding fuel to the fire by proclaiming Barack Oboma to be "a talker" and advices to voters to consider voting rather "a doer, not a talker." Therefore this newest strategy of hers is to show people that action and results are more important than plain talking about it. Which, in the end, is very true, but she should first maybe consider expanding negative ad about her candidates and focus on attracting new voters by showing them more positive aspects that she is capable of. Sometimes talking about other's mistakes creates even more enemies to oneself then he meant to create to the person he was talking about.
