Will it work?
by Barbora Misakova

Politics is about changing your mind and opinions but in a way that no one will notice it. In case that someone anyway finds out you have changed it, you must be persuasive that it was meant to be like this, that changing your mind was in favor of voters not you as politician. US Republicans, often portrayed as the party of old, white men, have weak support among African-American and Latino voters. Their hostility toward immigration cannot be hidden behind those few elected officials of color. But when Michael Steele became the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2009 and a year later voter themselves have selected several Republican cand! idates of color to represent the party in November elections of US senators, representatives and state governors, a new question arose: is it a new party or just a new strategy? A New York Times considered a surge of African-American Republican candidates as an unexpected “reverberation” of Barack Obama’s election. But Republican Party is still a heavily white party which had only 11 percent of non-white Republicans in 2009 what is nothing in comparison with 36 percent of Democrats. That’s why another explanation crop out: Republican leaders are aware of shifting American demographics and evolving attitudes toward race. As John Fortier, political scientist at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute aptly said: “The country is getting more diverse, so the Republican Party will have to attract a greater shape of minority support to be competitive in elections.” One question still remains: will be this new strategy working?

Ženy triumfujú v kalifornských primárkach
by Magdalena Rosova

Američania volili svojich kandidátoch, ktorí pôjdu do novembrových volieb. Meg Whitmanová,! bý valá riaditeľka eBay, získala republikánsku nomináciu na post guvernéra a Carlz Fiorinová, bývalá riaditeľkaf Hewlett-Packard, bude republikánskou kandidátkou do senátu. Whitmanová, 53 ročná miliardárka, investovala do vlastnej kampane svojich 71 miliónov dolárov. Fiorinová, 55, má podporu konzervatívcov kvôli svojmu nesúhlasu s interrupciou a s homosexuálnymi man&#! 382;elstvami. V novembrových voľbách bude čeliť súčasnej demokratickej senátorke Barbare Boxerovej.

Women triumph in California primary
by Magdalena Rosova

Americans voted to choose their candidates for Novembers midterm elections. 12 out of 50 American states has already voted. November election will decide about all chairs in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate. In California primaries for governor and Senate people supported strong women such as Former eBay chief Meg Whitman or former Hewlett-Packard head Carly Fiorina. The candidates have to fight against the voter anger at the US economy and growing unemployment. Spectacular battle happened in Arkansas on Tuesday where another woman Blanche Lincoln defeated her challenger Bill Halter. Incumbent Senator Lincoln had support of Barack Obama and also Bill C! linton, which is quite strong triumph. But Lincoln still have to face her Republican rival John Boozman, who will try to defeat her in November elections. In California two successful businesswomen easily won the Republican primaries for the gubernatorial and Senate races. Meg Whitman, former eBay chief, will be the Republican nominee for governor and Carly Fiorina, former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, will be a nominee for Senate. Whitman, 53-year-old billionaire, spent her own 71 million dollars on her campaign. In primaries she defeated her rival Steve Poizner. She got 65 percent and Poizner only 25.8. However, California has never before elected a woman governor. Outgoing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger can not candidate again because of term limits and Whitman will try to replace him. Carly Fiorina, 55, has support of conservatives because of her opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage. In November election she will try to replace Democratic Senator Barbara B! oxer.

Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party gains momentum show preliminary election results
by Zuzana Zelenakova

According to the preliminary results of the latest elections in the Netherlands, there is no clear winner. Therefore it could take months to create new coalition government. In the wake of the elections, Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who is the leader of the Christian Democratic Alliance resigned Wednesday as his party lost about half of its parliamentary seats. He is to remain in the office until a new coalition is formed. Center-right Liberal Party and center-left Labor Party both ended up with 31 seats each, while conservative anti-Islam Freedom Party gained 23 seats, which exceeded all expectations. "More security, less crime, less immigration, less Islam ! - that is what the Netherlands has chosen," said the leader of the party Geert Wilders, who has become truly famous due to his anti-Islamic stance. "I believe we should have a stop of the mass immigration from Islamic countries not because the people are bad, but because they bring a culture that really is against everything in our own values." The Freedom Party´s outcome in the elections could mean it will become a part of the next coalition government. So far about 88 percent of the votes had been counted. Earlier opinion polls showed that the most probable winner is Liberal Party, however, if these expectations come true Liberal leader Mark Rutte will have some tough time to secure a parliamentary majority given his severe austerity policies. He would need at least three other parties to achieve the majority. The Liberals are trying to push through some serious spending cuts of up to 39 billion euros over the next decade, but it seems they will be forced to compromi! se. "The Netherlands can emerge stronger from the crisis by ta! king mea sures now," said 43-year-old Rutte. The elections in the Netherlands were the first in a eurozone country since the Greek collapse.
