44 year old Sarah Louise Heath Palin who is the current governor of Alaska and at the same time the Republican vice-presidential nominee in the 2008 United States presidential election has just made another step forward in her campaign as she met world leaders for the first time. Palin´s premiere took place in New York where she talked to Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe as well as former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Palin has been frequently criticized for her lack of experience in the field of foreign policy. There is her reaction to those voices. As the Alaska governor received her passport only last year she had not met any of world leaders until now. Palin who was chosen by the Republican presidential candidate John McCain as his “running mate” on August 29, 2008 discussed security problems in Afghanistan with President Karzai. “I found her quite a capable woman,” he said later. “She asked the right questions on Afghanistan.” With President Uribe she talked about the fight against drugs and trade issues. When it comes to her meeting with Henry Kissinger she mainly tried to gain some precious information on the situation in Georgia, Russia, China and Iran. "Rather than make specific policy prescriptions, she was largely listening, having an exchange of views and also very interested in forming a relationship with people she met with today," he said. On Wednesday, Palin together with John McCain are scheduled to meet with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. Later Palin alone will meet Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. All this seems to be a preparation for Palin before a debate on 2 October with Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee for the November 2008 election, who currently chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Will there be a presidential debate Friday? by Magdalena Rosova

Congress and the Bush administration are close to making an agreement on $700 billion rescue of the financial sector according to words of John McCain.

The Republican presidential nominee met with Bush, his political rival Barack Obama and congressional leaders at the White House. After the meeting, both McCain and Obama made rounds on network evening TV programs.

In McCain words some members of Congress are concerned about the big price tag for taxpayers but on the other hand he says they needed to be aware of the critical situation the country is in.

McCain hopes that an agreement will succeed so that he can travel to a presidential debate in Mississippi on Friday but he also highlighted that he would not participate in the Fridays debate unless there was a consensus. "I believe that it's very possible that we can get an agreement in time for me to fly to Mississippi," McCain said late Thursday. "I understand how important this debate is and I'm very hopeful. But I also have to put the country first." Unfortunately, his brave attempt to save the economy looks like he is afraid of the confrontation in the debate.

However, Obama still wants the debate and is planning to travel to Mississippi. He said: "Obviously the biggest priority is making sure that we get this deal done. But I also think it's important to describe to the American people where the next president wants to take the country and how he's going to deal with this crisis."

The debate organizers in Mississippi continue in preparations. Television networks are moving to Mississippi as well. The discussion is going to be mainly about the question how to stop further weakening the economy.

Prezidentské voľby v Spojených Štátoch Amerických sú už za dverami. Atmosféra v politických kruhoch tomu nasvedčuje. Zase raz sa kandidáti John McCain a Barack Obama snažia presvedčiť ľudí, aby volili práve ich. Téma, ktorej vo svojich volebných venujú zrejme najväčšiu pozornosť je ekonomika, ktorá je, ako sa zdá, pre voličov najdôležitejšia.

Americká ekonomika je hlboko v problémoch a obaja kandidáti sa pokúšajú povedať dôvod problémov a taktiež vymyslieť dobré riešenie na zažehnanie krízy. Republikán John McCain napadol lakomosť a korupciu na Wall Street, so sľubom celé to napraviť. Na druhej strane kandidát demokratov Barack Obama obviňuje politiku Bieleho Domu a verí, že Mccain by priniesol viac toho istého.

Žiadny z kandidátov ale už dávno nepovedal čosi, čo by ekonomike skutočne pomohlo. Taktiež, akosi zabudli spomenúť, že sú členmi Kongresu, ktorý toho veľa pre ukončenie krízy neurobil. McCain je totiž senátorom Arizony (už po štvrtýkrát) a Obama je senátorom Illinois (po prvýkrát).

Tak či tak, Obama a McCain sa obaja snažia nájsť niečo, čo by získalo pozornosť a dôveru voličov, ktorí sa v tejto problematickej ekonomike obávajú os svoje hypotéky na nehnuteľnosti a istotu práce. Obaja z nich ale jasne hovoria, že táto nešťastná situácia nie je ani náhodou chybou voličov.

Poďme však ku konkrétnym politikám kandidátom. Obama vo všeobecnosti podporuje väčšiu ochranu spotrebiteľov, lepší regulačný prehľad a väčšiu intervenciu vlády. A McCain preferuje trhový systém s menšími federálnymi zásahmi a byrokraciou.

Obaja podporujú zníženie daní, každý však do inej miery. Obama chce znížiť nerovnosť medzi bohatými a chudobnými zvýšením daní pre bohatých Američanoch. McCain ale chce vyprodukovať nové pracovné miesta udržaním nízkych daní pre platcov daní s vysokým príjmom a znížením úrokov pre korporácie.

Je to neuveriteľné, ale je to pravda - je to už sedem rokov, čo teroristi zaútočili na Ameriku a spôsobili jej bolestnú ranu, ktorá sa dodnes nezahojila. Sedem rokov, čo teroristi zaútočili na Svetové obchodné centrum a prevrátili americký svet plný hrdosti hore nohami. Toto výročie je vážnou príležitosťou dať všetko stranou, na chvíľu sa zastaviť a pripomenúť si, čo to pre nás znamená - pre nás, ktorí sme stále nažive.

Tento jeden výnimočný deň - tento rok pripadol na štvrtok - si tento rok uctili aj obaja prezidentskí kandidáti - republikán John McCain a demokrat Barack Obama. Tento deň nemal nič spoločné s politikou a predvolebným bojom. Nekonali sa žiadne prejavy, žiadny boj, hlavnú úlohu hrali spomienky. Spolu kráčali k miestu, kde kedysi stálo Svetové obchodné centrum, aby si uctili pamiatku tých, ktorí zahynuli počas teroristických útokov.

Čo bolo dosť prekvapujúce, prezidentskí kandidáti sa chvíľu smiali a diskutovali, o chvíľu len ticho kráčali. Za nimi kráčali starosta New Yorku Michael Bloomberg a Cindy McCainová. Michelle Obamová zostala doma s dcérou. Pri Ground Zero, na začiatku príjazdovej cesty, sa zastavili a na zem položili ruže - Obama ružovú a McCain žltú ružu. Potom sa išli porozprávať s požiarnikmi a policajtami.

McCain navštívil ešte predtým Pennsylvániu. Miesto v blízkosti toho, kde sa zrútilo tretie z celkovo štyroch lietadiel. Povedal, že pasažieri letu číslo 93 leteckej spoločnosti United Airlines sa pokúsili prekaziť plán teroristov, ktorí chceli s lietadlom zaútočiť na ďalší cieľ. Je na nás, aby sme si uchovali spomienku na nich.

Spomínaní dvaja politici sa neskôr v ten deň stretli na Kolumbijskej univerzite, aby prediskutovali tému verejnej služby. Vystúpili oddelene, jediným spoločným bodom bolo podanie si rúk.

Ešte pri Ground Zero obaja poďakovali polícii a potriasli si ruky s poručíkmi. Obama povedal: "Vážime si všetko, čo robíte. Boh vám žehnaj. Myslíme na vás dnes aj v ostatné dni." Podľa Bloomberga je toto posledný rok pri Ground Zero. Čoskoro sa na tomto mieste má začať nová výstavba.

September 11 without politics by Silvia Szarkova

It is unbelievable, but it is true- it has been the seventh year since terrorists attacked the American powers and gave them a painful hit, which is an open wound till nowadays. Seven years till terrorist attacked also the World Trade Center and made the American world full of proud crash and turn upside down. This is a great event to put everything aside, stop for a moment and remember what this means for all of us- all of us who are still alive.

This one rare day- Thursday this year- was this time honored also by the both Presidential candidates- Republican John McCain and Democratic Barack Obama. This day was free of politics, free of competition. There were no speech, no fights, just the memory. They walked together into the great pit where World Trade Center once stood to honor the memory of those died in terrorist attack.

Surprisingly, one time they were laughing or chatting, other time just silently walking. Behind them, New York’s mayor Michael Bloomberg and Cindy McCain were walking. Michelle Obama stayed at home with their daughter. Right at the Ground Zero, at the bottom of the ramp, they stopped and laid a rose into the pool- a pink rose from Obama, yellow one from McCain. Then they went to speak with fire and police crew.

Earlier, McCain held a visit in western Pennsylvania, near to the place where the third out of four planes crashed. He declared that the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 are believed to turn off the terrorists´ idea of crashing with the plane. It is our deal to remember them all.

The two politics met again later that day at Columbia University forum on public service. Their appearance was separated, joined just with the hand shaking.

Yet at the Ground Zero, both thanked to police department and shook hands with the officers. Obama said: "Appreciate everything you do, God bless you all. We think about you this day and every day." According to Bloomberg, this is a last year of Ground Zero, because the ramp goes away for the rebuilding.

Es ist bereits gut bekannt, dass John McCain, der republikanische Kandidat für die Präsidentschaftswahlen im November, seinen Vizepräsidenten gewählt hat. Dieser mögliche künftige Vizepräsident von den USA ist eine Frau - Sarah Palin, Gouverneurin von Alaska.

Palin beschrieb sich selbst am Mittwoch grundsätzlich als eine Außenseiterin und indirekt kritisierte sie den sehr populären Kandidaten der Demokratischen Partei, Barack Obama.

Als erstes sagte sie, sie sei nur eine "durchschnittliche Mama, die ihre Kinder zu außerschulischen Veranstaltungen fährt" und dann erzählte sie eine Geschichte über ihre vorige politische Karriere als Bürgermeisterin einer kleinen Stadt, bevor sie zur Gouverneurin gewählt wurde.

Sie sagte: "Ich hatte den Vorteil, den Großteil meines Lebens in einer Kleinstadt verbringen zu können. Ich war nur eine durchschnittliche Mama, die sich um ihre Kinder kümmerte und die PTA unterschrieb, weil ich meinen Kindern eine bessere öffentliche Bildung bieten wollte. Wenn ich mich um die Funktion im Stadtrat beworben habe, brauchte ich keine Zielgruppen- und Wählerprofile, weil ich die Wähler und auch ihre Familien kannte."

Wenn sie über ihre ehemalige Arbeit erzählte, griff sie indirekt Barack Obama an. Palin sagte: "Da es so aussieht, dass unsere Opponenten in diesen Präsidentschaftswahlen diese Erfahrung ein bisschen gering schätzen, würde ich ihnen gerne erklären, was alles diese Arbeit beinhaltet. Ich glaube, Bürgermeister in einer Kleinstadt ist eine Art "Gemeindeorganisator", außer dass man wirkliche Verantwortung hat." Es ist gut bekannt, dass Obama als Gemeindeorganisator arbeitete, daher ist es offensichtlich, was Palin damit meinte.

Sie sagte auch, sie ginge nicht nach Washington, um eine gute Einstellung von Reportern und Kommentatoren anzustreben - "Ich gehe nach Washington, um den Volk dieses Landes zu dienen." Das könnte als eine andere Attacke an Barack Obama gedeutet werden.

There is still some time till the November presidential elections in the US will take place. Both political parties already have their candidates and now it is up to people who they consider to be better leader for their home country.

Two biggest rivals of these days, 72-years-old John McCain from Republican Party and 47-years-old Barack Obama from Democratic Party, have introduced potential vice-presidents these days. I think this is standard process but for many people interested in these affairs there has been one relatively big surprise.

Barack Obama has slated Joseph Biden, who is considered to be expert in foreign policy as well as in army and armaments. According to all of the facts, this is probably nothing special or surprising. But nomination which came from McCain’s side has even surprised the members of the Republican Party. If McCain won the November’s elections, his vice-president would be woman who is now the head of the Northern part and state of the United States. Right, her name is Sarah Palin and she is governor in Alaska. According to McCain’s words she is the right person he needs, because she is young, ambitious and has got same opinions as he. She is only the second woman in American history, who could become a vice-president.

Palin’s nomination caused the shock even for media because she is not as known as other candidates who were predicted to acquire this post. And her nomination was immediate. Reporters even don’t know what the pronunciation of her name is. But in my opinion it is not as important. What is more important for the possible president is the fact Palin has got the same or similar opinions. For example because she is mother of five kids and the youngest one of them suffers from the Down syndrome she is against the abortions as well as against the marriages of homosexuals although she has got many friends from them. As I have already mentioned, she is governor of Alaska. And because there is a beautiful nature, she can appreciate it and wants to protect it.

Although she is not as known, many people think McCain has decided in the right way and not only because this 44-years-old woman won some beauty competition when she was younger…

Ešte stále zostáva nejaký čas do novembrových prezidentských volieb v Spojených štátoch. Obe politické strany už vybrali svojich kandidátov a teraz je to už iba na ľuďoch, koho budú považovať za lepšieho vodcu svojej krajiny.

Dvaja najväčší protivníci v týchto dňoch, 72 ročný John McCain zo strany republikánov a 47 ročný Barack Obama z demokratickej strany, nedávno predstavili potenciálnych viceprezidentov. Myslím si, že je to štandardný postup, ale mnohých ľudí, ktorí sa o tieto záležitosti zaujímajú, zaskočila jedna vec.

Barack Obama nominoval Josepha Bidena, ktorý je považovaný za odborníka na zahraničnú politiku ako aj na zbrane a zbrojenie. Podľa všetkého toto nie je nič špeciálne či prekvapivé. Ale nominácia, ktorá prišla zo strany Johna McCaina, dokonca prekvapila aj členov republikánskej strany. Keby McCain vyhral novembrové voľby, jeho viceprezidentom by sa stala žena, ktorá je momentálne na čele najsevernejšej časti a štátu Ameriky. Správne, jej meno je Sarah Palinová a je guvernérkou Aljašky. Podľa McCainových slov je Palinová tou správnou osobou, ktorú potrebuje, pretože je mladá, ambiciózna a má rovnaké názory ako on. Je iba druhou ženou v histórii Spojených štátov, ktorá by sa mohla stať viceprezidentkou.

Palinovej nominácia spôsobila šok dokonca aj médiám, pretože nie je taká známa ako ostatní kandidáti, z ktorých sa predpokladalo, že jeden získa túto pozíciu. A jej nominácia bola nečakaná. Reportéri dokonca nevedia, ako sa jej meno správne vyslovuje. Ale podľa môjho názoru toto nie je až také dôležité. Čo je pre možno budúceho prezidenta dôležitejšie je fakt, že Palinová má rovnaké alebo podobné názory. Los dos rivales más grandes de estos días, John McCain de 72 años del Partido Republicano y Barack Obama de 47 años del Partido Demócrata, han introducido a vicepresidentes potenciales. Pienso que es el proceso estándar, pero para muchas personas interesadas en estos asuntos fue una sorpresa relativamente grande.

Barack Obama ha elegido a Joseph Biden, que, como se considera, es el experto en la política exterior así como en el ejército y armamentos. Según todos estos hechos, no es probablemente nada especial o sorprendente. Pero el nombramiento que vino del lado de McCain aún ha sorprendido a los miembros del Partido Republicano. Si McCain ganara las elecciones del noviembre, su vicepresidente sería la mujer que es ahora la jefa de la parte del Norte y el estado de los Estados Unidos. Los periodistas aún no saben cual comom pronunciar su apellido. Pero en mi opinión no es tan importante. Lo que es más importante para el presidente posible es el hecho que Palin tiene las mismas opiniones o similares. Aunque es la madre de cinco niños y el más jóven sufre síndrome de Down está en contra de los abortos así como contra los matrimonios de homosexuales aunque tiene muchos amigos entre ellos. Como ya he mencionado, es la gobernadora de Alaska. Y porque hay una naturaleza hermosa allí, puede apreciarla y quiere protegerla.

Aunque no la conocen tanto, muchas personas piensan que McCain ha hecho una decisión correcta y no sólo porque esta mujer de 44 años ganó alguna competición de belleza cuando era más jóven …

Ich glaube, es ist ein Standardprozess, jedoch gab es für viele Leute, die sich für diese Sachen interessieren, eine ziemlich große Überraschung.

Barack Obama wählte Joseph Biden, der als Experte sowohl in Auslandspolitik, als auch in Armee- und Rüstungsanelegenheiten betrachtet wird. Allen Fakten nach ist dies wahrscheinlich nichts Spezielles oder Überraschendes. Was sicher wichtiger für den möglichen künftigen Präsidenten ist, ist die Tatsache, dass Palin gleiche oder ähnliche Ansichten hat. Zum Beispiel ist sie Mutter von fünf Kindern, wobei das jüngste an Down-Syndrom leidet. Aus diesem Grund spricht sie sich gegen Abtreibungen und auch gegen homosexuelle Hochzeiten aus, obwohl sie unter ihnen viele Freunde hat. Als ich bereits erwähnt habe, ist sie Gouverneurin von Alaska. Und da die Natur dort wunderschön ist, kann sie sie schätzen und will sie schützen.

Obwohl sie nicht so bekannt ist, glauben viele Leute, dass McCain eine richtige Entscheidung getroffen hat. Und nicht nur weil diese 44-jährige Frau irgendeinen Schönheitswettbewerb gewann, wenn sie jünger war...

It’s interesting how those remarks didn’t make it into his ad.” A recent NBC-Wall Street Journal survey indicated that only half of those who voted for Clinton are now supporting Obama, while about 20 percent are backing McCain. Being aware of that, Obama agreed to allow Clinton’s name to be placed in nomination on Wednesday night. Barack Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and Michelle Obama's older brother, Craig Robinson, also will have roles in the convention.

Dems rip into McCain at Obama's convention by Radka Konkolova

Very important and significant day for American citizens and for the whole United States is still closer and closer. I mean significant in the mean of political power. The November 4, 2008 will mean either resumption of administration of republicans with John McCain on head or change, which means the new president, will be from democratic part.

This year’s candidates from democratic part have been both very special. So when this part wins November’s elections, new president of this country will be a black man. It would be the first black president in the history of United States. But in the beginning, actually one month ago, it wasn’t as sure. It was because there were two very strong and ambitious candidates from Democratic Party who were fighting in order to acquire public favour. And everybody certainly knows that both candidates have been a bit rare for this post, because the first one has been a black man and the second one has been a woman. And this would really be a big change for this country, because there has never been woman or black person leading this big democratic country. But now we can say Americans won’t be led by a woman, because Hilary Rodham Clinton was defeated by Barack Obama. I think this guy is very popular among American people as well as among people from other countries of the world. Many officials and governments of other countries have wished Obama to become a president.

We will see the consequences soon. The Obama’s current rival is not a beginner. He contested to presidential post several times before, but he never won. Of course he is from the “rival” republican party. I think everyone knows his name, but for integrity, it is John McCain.

In this republican party the decision of presidential candidate was not as complicated and published as in Democratic Party, so I think McCain is very strong rival. On the other hand, in my opinion he is too old to execute such significant work which is connected with this post.

This night Obama’s formal nomination will happen. There will be many persons with their speeches but the most important and awaited are words of his biggest rival from their party, Hilary Clinton. According to her words she is happy although she won’t be part of November’s elections. I think she can be proud of herself because she got very far and she has still got support from the side of many American citizens.

And they very ones will have got the last word in the elections. So we are all very curious whether America will finally have got a black president…

On Thursday August 28-the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I have a dream” speech, the democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama stands before delegates and the nation to accept the Democratic presidential nomination. “This is a monumental moment in our nation’s history, “Martin Luther King III, the civil rights icon’s oldest son, told the Associated Press on Wednesday August 27. The civil rights leader proclaimed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28, 1963, “I have a dream, that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” Obama, known for his impressive oratory, has been trying to lower expectations for his acceptance speech. Senior strategist David Axelrod said „Obama’s goal is to talk to the American people about the challenges we face and what we need to do to solve them, and the stakes of continuing to do what we are doing.” Singers Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder and Will.i.am were also scheduled to perform, with Academy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson singing the national anthem. Delegates of states were allowed to apportion their votes between Obama and Clinton, who stepped forward to propose that Obama be declared the nominee by acclamation. Former President Bill Clinton also called for unity and criticized a lot of Republican Party policies. Delaware Senator Joe Biden, who accepted the vice presidential nomination also supported Barack Obama and criticized Republican candidate John McCain. “These times require more than a good soldier. They require a wise leader,” Biden said. “A leader who can change ... the change that everybody knows we need.”

Vo štvrtok 28. augusta- na 45. výročie historického prejavu „Mám jeden sen“ Martina Luthera Kinga ml., sa demokratický prezidentský kandidát Barack Obama postaví pred delegátov a pred národ a prijme prezidentskú nomináciu Demokratickej strany. „Toto je veľkolepý moment v histórii nášho národa,“ povedal Associated Press v stredu 27. augusta Martin Luther King III, najstarší syn ikony občianskych práv. Vodca v boji za občianske práva prehlásil na schodoch Lincolnovho pamätníka vo Washingtone 28. augusta 1963: „Mám sen, že jedného dňa tento národ vstane a naplní skutočný význam svojho kréda- Tieto pravdy považujeme za samozrejmé: že všetci ľudia boli stvorení ako seberovní.“ Obama, známy svojím strhujúcim rečníckym umením, sa snažil znížiť očakávania ohľadom svojho akceptačného prejavu.
