Chris Cantell Discusses Politics: 2008 campaign is top news story Notme

According to a recent study released this Monday, politics attracts the U.S media's attention more than the war in Iraq. The presidential campaign became one hot subject as the rivals are involving in heavy and controversial disputes. The report by the Project for Excellence in Journalism said: "Campaign coverage that had paid more attention to Democrats than Republicans in the first three months of the year became more evenly split between the parties."The researchers examined almost every media source: 18.000 stories from 13 newspapers, eight radio outlets, five online sites, three cable-news channels and both morning and evening network newscasts.According to the report the war issues made up just fewer than 15 percent of news reports, compared to 22 percent for the first quarter.Democrats and Republicans received nearly the same coverage, 42 percent vs. 41 percent, compared to the previous quarter when the Democrats had 64 percent and the Republicans 24 percent. They said that Barack Obama had the most coverage from the Democratic camp. For the Republicans the leaders are John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, but the coverage was split among them.Other top stories were the massacre from the Virginia Tech with 5 percent and with 2 percent the Don Imus controversy, Iran and the fired U.S. attorneys. It seems that the recent drama of Paris Hilton can't be compared with the controversy of Anna Nicole Smith, not having enough coverage as the Smith's dead and disputes over her baby's custody.

Edwards talks tough at Clinton Notme

In a four day tour bus through New Hampshire, John Edwards started criticizing his Democratic rivals, specially Hillary Rodham Clinton but without mentioning her name.In a speech at Dartmouth College he said: "Real change starts with being honest, and I want to say something again: The system in Washington is rigged, and I'll say it again, it's rigged and it's rigged by greedy powers. It's rigged by the system to favor the establishment."The former North Caroline senator condemns the Clinton era politics referring to the Lincoln Bedroom when campaign donors were allowed to stay there in the 1990s."The American people deserve to know that their presidency is not for sale, the Lincoln Bedroom is not for rent," Edwards said.Kathleen Strand, a spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton said that these kinds of angry attacks would not improve Sen. Edwards' flagging campaign: "Sen. Clinton has the leadership and experience to make real change happen, and she has been fighting for American families for 35 years."In the tour, Edwards is traveling with his wife and their three children, letting the bus to the strains of Sheryl Crow's "A Change Will Do You Good."Asked about his comment related to the Lincoln Bedroom he replied: "I'm not holier than thou about this. I have personally raised millions of dollars as a presidential candidate. What I'm talking about is what's happened in the past through multiple administrations."

GOP touts swift action on Craig Notme

The Republican Senator Larry Craig had to resign after 25 years of representing the state of Idaho after being caught in a Minneapolis airport men's room by an undercover police officer engaging in conduct "often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct.'' Craig resigned Saturday over the sex scandal after being pressured by other Republicans worried that elections next year will have disastrous results for them."I apologize for what I have caused. I am deeply sorry," Craig said.Other Republican, GOP Sen. David Vitter, was involved in soliciting from his Washington phone an escort service that it turned out to be a prostitution ring lead by a woman that was accused after that of racketeering.Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., the Senate Republican campaign chairman, said that Craig admitted his guilt, but "David Vitter never did that. Larry Craig did."A Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy said that he doesn't think Republicans will ask Vitter to resign because otherwise he will be replaced with a Democrat, and that isn't their greatest desire. "It's easier to ask Larry Craig to resign because he'd be replaced by a Republican."At first, Craig admitted the charges, but after that he denied any intercourse with the undercover police officer saying he did nothing wrong and "I am not gay. I never have been gay."

Clinton promises to save Social Security
by Notme dfsfs

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton promised in front of the Alliance for Retired Americans, that if she is going to be elected as president of United States she will not cut the Social Security services and neither will raise the retirement age or privatize the taxpayer-funded system."This is the most successful domestic program in the history of the United States," Clinton said. When I'm president, privatization is off the table because it's not the answer to anything."She mentioned in her speech that her husband, former president Bill Clinton left a secure Social Security system until 2055 and that now, George W. Bush took the system in to deficit. She said that raising the retirement age and reducing the benefits is not an answer."We need to get back to the fiscal responsibility that we had in the 1990s," she said. Clinton also appealed to Union workers make up a majority of the Alliance's membership, supporting the "Employer Free Choice Act," legislation (HR 800) that would make it easier for workers to join unions. The former first lady is expected to formally unveil her plan for providing universal health care coverage, saying that her health cost control plan would trim at least $120 billion a year from national health care spending.

Chris Cantell Discusses Politics: Sen McCain went to talk to the students
by Corina Ciubotaru

Senator John McCain went to talk to some of his younger electors, namely high school students a few days ago. Well-known for his support for the Iraq war, Mr. McCain answered questions until he was caught off guard by a teenager with strong questions up his sleeve. They referred to gay rights, the war in Iraq and earned the young man some harsh criticism from his peers and teachers. McCain's answers were calm and diplomatic for the most part, sometimes too blunt and sometimes sounding too much like a politician. He was asked if his age won't get in the way of his leading the country and whether he supports gay marriage. This is where he gave his most well-prepared answers, stating his support for non-discrimination rather than gays and trying hard to look like that open-minded, people-person President they all think America needs. Some might say teenagers shouldn't be a target for candidates, as not all of them are old enough to vote, but candidates have to stand out with something, and win their votes by any means they see fit. And all the voters have the right to question the candidates until they decide in the right one to represent their needs. This is part of the democratic process just like the vote itself so it is not something to be overlooked or treated lightly. In the end, it will all come down to which candidate has captured the people's hearts most and who is thought to be capable of taking the country forward.

Chris Cantell Discusses Politics: Clinton vs.Obama
by Jana Passova

Democrats start to worry that the long time running fight of nominations may decrease the chance of the party to win. Barack Obama and Hillary Clintom do not agree. Superdelegates are required to support a candidate who will win the primary contests. The question also is if delegates of Clinton from Florida and Michigan primaries will be able to participate in the convention vote. The most importatnt thing for Democrats is not to lose the general election. The Party of Democrats should not take any "decisions in the backroom" by the party elite. The Democratic Party punish delegates from Florida and Michigan because they were holding their votes before the date Feb. 5. It was announced by Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker of the Democratic National Convention. But it should not be a big deal. Delegates of these states should not decite about the nominee. A candidate needs to have 2.025 delegates to win the democratic nomination. Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois, has 1.037 delegates. Hillary Clinton, wife of previous president of the U. S., has 953 Democratic National Convention democrates. These numbers came from an unofficial tally thegreenpapers.com. It is a nonpartisan Web site which is in charge of summary of election statistic. Almost 800 superdelegates are not counted. Clinton seems to lose her delegates. One of them Jonh Lewis, Georgia Congressman, who previously supported her wants to give his vote to Obama. And he is not alone. Now Obama is about 1 percent over Clinton in delegate count. Many of superdelegates are ready to support a person who will win the higher number of votes in primaries.

Candidate with the strongest advantage
by Martina Harvanova

The elections are approaching quickly. While among Democrats the fight between two "untraditional" candidates, an Afro American and a woman, escalates and the rivals struggle to appear the best, the strongest and the most trustworthy future presidents, Republican's followers won't apparently change the name that will be wrote on the electoral sheets. The absolute winner standing for traditional values preferred by Republicans is John McCain. The evident fact that McCain is already running a general election campaign against a Democrat may only help him to convince more Americans to stand by his side. Apart from political programs they represent and no matter who is going to be his opponent, an absolute advantage of him as a "white man" predetermines him to maintain a stable position in the attempt for presidential chair. And the Bush's recommendation will change it just in a small measure. However, he'll probably say his "yes" to the possibility of McCain being the U. S. President, despite the previous discrepancy between them. The apparent differences in the opinions of Bush and McCain emerged a few years ago. The struggle for White House in 2001 showed us how the thoughts of both about the directions of the United States differ. The main conflicts started up in 2001 and then in 2003 when McCain as the Arizona senator voted against tax cuts introduced by Bush's cabinet. John McCain now says he supports making those tax cuts permanent. He also supports the war in Iraq, but criticizes the management of the war. In the issue of immigration he is for the increase of visas issued for agricultural workers but on the other hand, he advocates tightening of the border by increasing the patrols. He also opposes universal health care and is for the opening of market by allowing providers to practice nationwide without regional restrictions.Democrats chose a stony path in the effort to achieve White House, their candidates are maybe too extraordinary for the position of the U. S. President. Consequently, John McCain disposes of a great chance to reach his goal. However, the story called Who Is Going To Be the Strongest Person of the World hasn't come to its end yet. The sharply observed fight may result in a surprising situation.

The Key to a Better World
by Livia Necasova

Today is the Super - Monday in Pakistan. The parlament election. Over 80 million people are entitled to vote. Important votes that could possibly change something. The situation in the country is very bad. Although I`ve never been there, the things that you hear every second day in the news or reading in the newspapers, Pakistan is not really a place a man would wanted to be. The most part of the country is very poor, the people didn`t get any of the elementary rights supposed to be provided by the state for the last 20 years. But still it`s a country who has something to offer. I think every country in the world has something what other countries don`t. Something that makes is special. The only thing why we talk about Pakistan now its because of the difficult politic situation. Not about the culture, the sights, the food. Which is really sad..The people of Pakistan don`t need a strong president, not to mention a strong prime minister. What they need and what they want is to have the power in their hands. In the hands of the people and the activists. They want to have a right to determine their own future. They want to have a say and make the " better " Pakistan together. It is over with the dictator regime of Pervez Musharraf. You have a chance now people to become a democratic state so don`t throw it away. You are just a step closer to open the right door. Politics should be about the people and not about fat bank accounts in the Switzerland.

Obama tries small-group politics
by Notme dfsfs

Barack Obama started to meet small groups of voters Monday. In the morning, he spoke in a restaurant from New Hampshire to eight voters and almost three times as many newspeople."We've been blessed to have some terrific crowds at these town hall meetings, but most of the time I'm doing most of the talking and not doing enough listening," Obama said in Hanover.Among his voters was a medical student that was asked by Barock Obama about the health care, a businessman asked about medical insurance and then he quizzed a recent college grad on the job market. It was a different meeting as he was used to crowded halls and public, but in here he founded intimacy. One support of his, Maggie North of Claremont, told him that if he continues to be dragged to well-publicized disputes with rivals he will risk becoming a usual part of the political scene."You can be it. But you've got to stop ╉ excuse me for being blunt ╉ you've got to stop getting involved in the way people are fighting each other, chewing you up a little more," Maggie North said.A Republican National Committee spokeswoman, Amber Wilkerson, said that Barack Obama's characterization of the presidential campaign shows he's unfit to lead."Unfortunately for Barack Obama, this campaign is not a fraternity hazing ritual, and Americans are not going to elect a rookie politician who has ditched his 'politics of hope' mantra and gone on the attack now that he's dropping in the polls," Wilkerson said.

Your best choice
by Claudia Sonea

The political scene gets muddy with White House contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Monday fighting at a crucial debate in Ohio over foreign policy and over an alleged anti-Obama smear. Obama had faithful aides that constantly replied to former first lady and attacked her. By highlighting Clinton's Senate vote in 2002 to authorize the Iraq war, Obama's campaign also accused the Clinton camp due to the picture of Obama dressed in a Somali robe and turban appeared (during an emotional visit by the candidate to his father's homeland of Kenya in 2006) on gossip website Drudge Report. Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe confessed the picture is an evidence of the subversive campaign of the opponent, but on the other side campaign manager Maggie Williams arguments that it is not fair to take advantage of the traditional clothing of countries and try to distract attention from real issues. Trade was another issue of debate; on one side Obama points out Clinton's past support for a North American pact passed by her husband's administration that many in Ohio blame for the loss of thousands of jobs. He registered 11 nominating wins in a row, new polls in Ohio and Texas and left Clinton in the doubt of having the required capacity to pull off the emphatic victories she needs to chase down Obama's lead in nominating delegates (in Texas for the first time, with 50 percent of likely Democratic primary voters backing him, compared to 46 percent for Clinton, according to CNN/Opinion Research ). In spite of the fact that in Ohio, a Quinnipiac University survey showed Clinton leading 51 percent to 40 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, she still has to win a state that even her husband, former president Bill Clinton, has said she must win. Even RealClearPolitics.com showed in recent polls the New York senator up nearly nine points in Ohio, where once she led by over 20 points. In her speech at George Washington University, Clinton said that unlike Obama, she did not have an instruction manual on foreign policy. Don't go away; soon they will start fighting physically. Grab popcorn and enjoy1

Counted delegates
by Barbora Misakova

To be honest, policy is not for me. Actually I don't understand why all those people are still trying to be the best in the eyes of others, if they sooner or later come with truth. No one is perfect, and president is only a man too. But anyway everyone, especially in the United States these days, is living for presidential election. Everyone pays attention to the candidates, everyone is monitoring the situation in the state, everyone is watching TV, reading newspapers, listening to radio. Everyone wants to know as much as possible to give his vote to the right person. But nominees for president could be complicated a little bit. Contest of delegates is coming.Wall Street Journal regards this elections for epoch-making because it is for the first time in 80 years when president and vice-president are not among candidates and so this contest has no evident leader neither among Democrats, nor Republicans. Democrats have two-step system & so there is higher possibility that the primary winner might not win the most delegates to the party's national convention. There are 370 Democratic delegates, the primary should determine first 126 delegates, and then caucuses should determine 67 delegates. In the primary election, delegates will be chosen according to their votes in 31 Senate districts. During the second election, candidates will be chosen according to their statewide results of the caucuses. Pledged delegates won primaries and caucuses among Democrats were Obama and Clinton. On the Republican side senator John McCain could confirm his presidential nomination & with his 1014 delegates needs only 177 more to get 1191 needed for the nomination. If candidate gets more than 50 percent, than he is a statewide winner; if he doesn't get so much, the statewide delegates will be chosen from the candidates with at least 20 percent of the vote.

Chris Cantell Discusses Politics: Close combat
by Claudia Sonea

These presidential elections are going to be spicy. The score is already tight between democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Now they fight for support among Texas primary voters, while Clinton leads Obama in Ohio, according to American Research Group Inc. poll conducted Feb. 29-March 1. If the poll taken on February 27 -28 had Obama leading 51-44, this one shows they are tied with 47 percent support each among Texas voters. If you are interested to know how things stand, I can tell you that in Ohio, Clinton is ahead 51-44 percent among the state's likely Democratic primary voters, but mostly the two polls show both in Texas and Ohio four percent of the voters remain undecided. Still despite her win in Ohio, she faced 11 straight losses to Obama. Things can change at any time, especially after the democratic primaries in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont, scheduled for March 4. According to the poll Clinton leads Obama 52 percent to 40 percent in Rhode Island, while in Vermont she has only 34 percent to Obama's 60 percent. Generally, they are separated by a couple of votes: 47 percent of Texas Democrats backed Obama, 43 percent backed Clinton; in Ohio, Clinton received 47 percent and Obama's 46 percent. The last poll included 746 likely primary voters in Ohio and 736 likely voters in Texas. Both surveys have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. Whoever will win the Democratic elections, will still have to face the Republican representative, thus the things are just about to get hotter and hotter on the US political stage. Stay connected, more to come.

Does it seem to me or is it Clinton?
by Barbora Misakova

Presidential elections are very unstable and in many cases also unpredictable. One day there is apparent leader who is going to become a president, but the second day we are not listening about anyone else than his rival. Yes, that's the world of ravenous policy. I wouldn't call it campaign but the fight. Probably the best known and the most spotted fight is running between Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton. While Obama looked like a real and successful presidential candidate, now the situation has changed a little bit. Clinton won three of four voting contests and so halted Barak Obama. I bet there is a lot of angry and disappointed (Obama's) people, but I think this is not the definite result. There is still important one thing & delegate math. There is one persistent question & will be Clinton able to close the gap among pledge delegates and so equalize score with Obama? Democratic strategist Bill Carrick thinks she will not: "The Obama campaign was prepared for a long campaign from the beginning." and he adds that Obama was "pursuing delegates" from the beginning. But Clinton didn't do so and it could be a very "tough for her". Carrick thinks "there isn't going to be one (delegate)" for Clinton.Of course, anything is final yet, but I would say that Hilary believes in herself too much and she can be really rough when it's needed. But I think both of these candidates will have it tough. While Clinton would be a first woman president, Obama would become a first black president & so the expectations are quite similar I would say. While Clinton is attacking Obama's low qualifications to be commander in chief, he is criticizing her reform of health service. They are insulting each other, blaming each other from saying lies, but after all they are still the strongest Democratic candidates! I am asking how is this possible?!

Democratic Primaries
by Claudia Sonea

Now it is time to see weather the future Democratic candidate at the presidential elections will be a woman or not. On the Super Tuesday of 2008 (the Tuesday in February or March of a presidential election year when the majority of states organize primary elections to select delegates that will later on be officially nominated at a national convention) the long fight of 14-month held between Barack Obama and if Hillary Rodham Clinton took an determinant turn. Primaries held in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island had as top issues the economy, the North American Free Trade Agreement and others. After 11-straight losses to Obama since February 5, Clinton can still hope to maintain her candidacy and get in the final round for presidency? She can because she won Ohio and Texas and split the votes with Obama in Rhode Island and Vermont. Even her husband, his most supportive fan, said that her campaign can go on with the largest states on her side. However, it is still premature to rejoice because there are seven more weeks until Pennsylvania will vote on 22 April and the odds are against her due to Obama's existing hundred-plus delegate lead. Nevertheless, all her struggle faced steep odds, but she was resistant and went on despite humiliations from her adversary (some that once where close friends and supporters), the impatience of small donors who contributed $35 million. By laying the stress on the lack of national security of Obama and the fact that he is not yet prepared to be commander in chief, Clinton hopes to get through the final elections and face the Republican nominee (most probably McCain as he already won the primaries). It would mean a great deal for a woman to take command of the most powerful country. She wants to become first women elected President of US and I surely wish she manages, not only because she deserves it as being one of the strongest character I have ever seen, but also because it would mean a step forwards for all the women in the world. Good luck!

Bush supports McCain

It wouldn't be for me to live in a policy sphere. There is a lot of people around you, I would better say too much, but is there anyone you can trust in? It's hard to say. When you just see for example candidate you really like and always support as he is talking or dealing with someone you really don't like because for his or her policy, reforms or statements, you probably start to think about his faithfulness. And what if this wrong person publicly says he is going to support your candidate? What would you think about it? Would you be loyal voter and stay with your candidate or not? And what if you were a presidential candidate and have this kind of dilemma? In this weird world of politicians you never know what you can expect. In this particular situation is also presidential candidate John McCain. His newest supporter is no one else than George W. Bush. It looks that both of them are satisfied. While Bush says: "John showed incredible courage, strength of character and perseverance in order to get to this moment and that's exactly what we need in a president" McCain said he appreciates Bush's endorsement and his service to the U.S. and added he wanted to have Bush at his side on the campaign trail. Well it looks they are really saying the truth and both really satisfied with their cooperation, but the same we thought about Clinton and Obama, before Clinton came forward with her speech "Shame on you Barack Obama!" when she criticized the way he leads his campaign. If we can be a witnesses of such incredible change of opinions only time will show. So far we could only see president Bush expressing in superlatives about McCain and he even looks he is in very optimistic mood. That confirms his statement: "I can help raise him money, and if he wants my pretty face standing by his side at one of these rallies, I'd be glad to show up."McCain said he intends to have as much campaigning events together as is possible for Bush. The only question now appears & Will be Bush's support a real support of McCain's campaign or will it have a negative influence on it?

Good luck!

McCain's plans for future
by Sandra Stoklaskova

U.S. presidential bid is going on and all candidates are trying their best to achieve the success in this competition. Both Democrats and Republicans are raising funds for their campaigning and for attracting potential voters. McCain have not raised as much money for his campaign in comparison to his Democratic rivals. Barack Obama raised $55 million and Hillary Clinton less, approximately $35 million, but the smallest amount was from McCain, it was $12 million. On the other hand main goal on his meetings is to have a personal contact with voters.McCain's present focus is to raise more money and maybe also gain a new fundraisers. As a gesture of acknowledgment to his previous faundraisers, he invited them and several senators, governors and journalists to his ranch for a barbecue. Just like this he would like to knock over less attention, which is given to him. "It makes me to work harder, to make sure that we maintain the visibility," said McCain. His another aim is to find a running mate and raise the money to be able to compete with Obama and Clinton in the general election.Next steps in his focus-list are also interesting. He plans to meet next week with Republican congressional leaders to discuss his role. Than he would like to introduce the public specific policy proposals. And one of his goal, and not the last one, is also to focus on the war, as he hopes to visit Iraq or Afghanistan, soon.We have to watch his steps carefully to make sure if he accomplished defined aims.

United States Presidential Election in two months
by Nina Gotzmannova

Less than two months are left to the day of United States presidential election. On November 4 2008 will eight democratic and nine republican candidates wait for the results of their campaign and the name of the new president of United States. The Democratic Party has several irons in the fire. The only woman between sixteen men Hillary Clinton, the only African American candidate Barack Obama or John Edwards, the most charismatic one. They attract most attention of the media and naturally the attention of the public. The other democratic candidates with their plain politic career, decent family life and silver hair may be viewed as almost boring. The winner is always the most notable one. The Republican Party has only one notable nominee. It's Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City. Other candidates are similar to the Democrats & career in U. S. Senate, nice family and white hair. Only the party affiliation is different. There is also a bunch of independents, but no one knows them. Sad but true. But the ability to gain media interest is in presidential campaign the most important thing. The numbers don't lie. The Rassmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows the public opinion very clearly. On September 13 was the most likely elected democratic candidate Hillary Clinton with 40 percent, the second was Obama with 21 percent and the Top Three encloses Edwards with 18 percent.Candidates of the Republican Party have slightly worse numbers. The Number One between Republicans is Thompson with only 28 percent and the second is Giuliani with 19 percent, almost as much as Edwards. But Hillary is still the pre-winner. There might be surprises when the election day will come, but the world should rather used to an idea of having a woman as a leader of one the most influential country in the world.

Murderer on parliament bid
by Claudia Sonea

Last year on November 6, Alexander Valterovich Litvinenko, Military Counter Intelligence Russian officer, was killed in United Kingdom due to polonium-210 radiation poisoning. In May 2007, the British Director of Public Prosecutions, Ken Macdonald, pointed Andrei Lugovoi as being suspect and seeked to extradite him. Russian government refused the British Foreign Office request under the pretext of the prohibition of extradition in Russia's constitution. Lugovoi, the alleged murderer, become famous after Moscow's refusal to extradite him to London and even created diplomatic tension between the two countries. Moreover, an unexpected opportunity appeared for him to get away of all accusation. Now that he runs for parliament on the ultra-nationalist LDPR party's ticket which leader Zhirinovsky justified the option by the fact that the British secret services made him an injustice. As a member of Parliament he gains immunity from all prosecutions that can be lifted only if members of parliament approve a special request from prosecutor. Russia has opened an investigation over the murder without making any charges. Lugovoi denies any implication and says that the British secret services are involved because Litvinenko was a critic of Kremlin that fled to London. The truth is not yet revealed, but it is awkward to have on the Parliament a person that has even the allegation of murder. The list will become formal at the LDPR party conference in Moscow and will be put forward at the parliamentary elections in December. Stay connected to see what's next.

Democrats want to stop giving Bush money for war
by Corina Ciubotaru

The war in Iraq isn't going very well. It has little results, it costs a lot of money and fewer people support it as days go by. The Democrats at least seem determined to bring the war to an end as soon as possible. From supporting the disarming of Saddam a few years ago when it all started, they now went to publicly disapprove the war his leader, George W. Bush. If they could get 60 votes in Congress, the Democrats would probably get all the American troops home by spring; but since they can't, they have to resort to other means of putting pressure on the President and getting their way. Now, next year's budget has to pass through Congress first and the Democrats are expected to approve the sum of $47 billion for the war, as well as the extra $40 billion to $50 billion that Bush might ask for this week. As you would expect, they are in no rush to discuss these measures and prefer to wait until November to make a decision. It is possible that during these two months, more Republicans will abandon the President's cause and the entire situation may change. In the meantime, around 30,000 troops will come home by next summer, bringing the number of soldiers to the pre-surge level. The surge seems to have worked out in the sense that attacks are rarer now but this does not, for many, justify the large number of soldiers stationed in Iraq, currently around 160,000.

Attorney General Wanted
by Claudia Sonea

The Justice Department was subdued to an investigation that lasted a few months and ended with the firings of nine U.S. attorneys. Although then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales escaped charges, there are still doubts hanging over him. In the search for a new Attorney General a name came in front and that is of Michael Mukasey that due to his calm demeanor and decades of courtroom experience, is expected to bring order in Justice Department wracked by claims of crass political manipulation. Both his foes and friends confess he's the right man for the job. Reinforcing his role of stabilizing and calming, according to Charles Stillman, a high-powered New York lawyer who described himself Monday as a Democrat who fervently supports Mukasey's nomination; moreover, he has no political agenda. Ron Kuby, an outspoken civil rights lawyer and radio host that mostly criticize government methods, is one of the harshest critics of the former judge, but he too thinks there is no one else better for the job. Mukasey opposes the death penalty and has enough intelligence to turn to low in his favor, to fit his views. Such critics show the long experience in terror cases as a judge, and as a federal prosecutor before that. In the beginning the 66 year-old judge was a reporter, but in 1987 was elected by President Reagan to the federal bench. The most hard-fought post-Sept. 11 terror cases: that of Jose Padilla, a U.S. citizen who was arrested in 2002 on a supposed mission to detonate a "dirty bomb." He handled terrorist cases for decades. Will he take off the job posting? Mukasey knew to stay away from trouble, not making enemies, but powerful friends. Now wait to see what happens.

Andrei Lugovoy will run for Parliament in Russia
by Corina Ciubotaru

Last year, a scandal was all over the news, involving the death of Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian secret service member, who died in exile in London due to intoxication with radioactive polonium-210. In a letter, Litvinenko accused Russian president Vladimir Putin of being responsible for his death, but the man that is held really responsible is Andrei Lugovoy. And Mr. Lugovoy now intends to run for Parliament in December elections for the Duma, on behalf of the party led by ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The Duma is Russia's lower chamber of Parliament and it has 450 seats. If elected, the former intelligence officer would receive immunity against charges against him in the murder case. He has always claimed to be innocent and he blames the billionaire Boris Berezovsky for Litvinenko's death and the attempts to discredit him.Ever since Litvinenko's passed away, British authorities have been trying to get Lugovoy extradited to England, to face trial in court. The Russian constitution forbids the extradition of its citizens and so the alleged murderer is still safe in his home land, protected by one of the most ill-tempered politicians of the country. However, Russia has agreed to let Lugovoy go to trial in England, if the British provide evidence he was responsible for the murder. Vladimir Zhirinovsky is well-known for his hate of the U.K. and his violent verbal attacks against British journalists. His party, the Liberal Democratic Party or LDPR, needs at least 7 percent of votes to be in the Parliament.

Bush calls for expansion of spy law
by Notme dfsfs

Wednesday, President Bush urged the Congress to make the Protect American Act, that allows the government to have permanently more power in intercepting foreign communications without a court order even involving American citizens, permanent and to expand the law before the initial term of six months. The new law changed the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act under the pressure of Bush administration.During a visit at Fort Meade, the National Security Agency headquarters, Bush said that the people working for the Agency need provisions contained in the Protect America Act, adopted last month, to do their jobs."It will be harder to figure out what our enemies are doing to train, recruit and infiltrate operatives into America," the president said. "Without these tools, our country will be much more vulnerable to attack."But some Democrats say that the changes of 1978 Act infringe the constitutional rights. The Congress had to put a six month limit on law. "The problem is the law expires on February 1st - that's 135 days from today," Bush said. "The threat from al-Qaida is not going to expire in 135 days."The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. Jay Rockefeller said that the lawmakers understand the need for updating the law, but they also have to protect the rights and liberties of Americans."For over five years, the president carried out a warrantless surveillance program that ignored the law and the role of court oversight," Rockefeller said.

Giuliani defends right to bear arms
by Notme dfsfs

Republican Rudolph W. Giuliani said Friday before the National Rifle Association (N.R.A.), a group he called once to be extremist, that he supports the right to bear arms for individuals as he cites the court ruling, Parker v. District of Columbia, which says the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to own handguns. Interviewed by the Associated Press, he said that his views changed since the attacks on Sept. 11 which he said, "puts a whole different emphasis on what America has to do to protect itself." But after three years since the attacks he was still supporting gun control."I think, after Sept. 11 ╉ I mean I probably would have had the same impression before, I'm not sure ╉ but after Sept. 11, all that seemed much more powerful to me," Giuliani said.He said in front of the N.R.A. that as a mayor he had to take advantage of "every law and every interpretation of every law" to reduce crime in New York.Giuliani supports now the Second Amendment, as a candidate for the GOP nomination, seeking now the support of his fellow Republicans from the party, many of whom regard the Second Amendment right to bear arms as a fundamental issue."It is a very, very strong description of how important personal liberties are in this country and how we have to respect them," he said referring to the ruling, adding it "sort of maybe even did more to crystalize my thinking on the whole gun issue in light of Sept. 11."

Giuliani is refusing to dump his anti-muslimic adviser
by Nina Gotzmannova

Unguarded statements may cost Rudy Giuliani his reputation. Or may not. After his homeland security adviser Peter King came under attack for his anti-muslim claiming, Rudy Giuliani stands steady behind him. The Republican Party presidential candidate is refusing to dump King.In an interview for website www.politico.com King said that in U. S. is "too many mosques", "too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam" and added "we should be much more aggressive in law enforcement". Later he told his sayings are taken out of context, but the video is already posted on the website and anyone can check it and decide where the truth is.Giuliani tried to explain what King, who is also his friend for 41 years, meant with the statements. He said King wanted to tell there are too many mosques where the violence and terrorism is not denounced. He also admits there are mosques which are not pro-terroristic. But he still didn't dump King, although his sayings are clearly attacking the religious rights of Muslims. Council of American-Islamic Relations is blaming King for attacks against Muslims for a longer time. They criticize him in 2003 and 2004, when he said that the mosques do not cooperate with law enforcement. Now CAIR has support from Democratic Party and Muslims groups, who also called for King's dismissal. In 2003 Congresswoman Maxine Waters accused him of racism. But Giuliani can let King work for him for another reasons. The conservative Americans may suffer from Islamophobia, a term used for people who have prejudice against Muslims or Islam, and therefore vote for candidate who can support their imaginary safety. However, the prejudice should be forgotten and the candidates should take care of democracy, equality and peace.

Edwards got standing ovations
by Nina Gotzmannova

The first of the five planned events in New Hampshire ended really well for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. At Richmond Middle School the politician gained two standing ovations for his answers. Now he only hopes the rest of the visit will go that smoothly too.The debate with pupils came just hours after a debate with his rivals. On Wednesday night Edwards had a discussion with Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. All politics and aspiring presidents concurred and admitted, that they can't guarantee the U. S. forces will be back home in several years. They said is not much possible for U. S. soldiers to leave Iraq by the end of the next presidential term in 2013. And then the question came. Eighth-grader James Harvard asked Edwards, how is it possible that he can't guarantee return of the soldiers, while other Democratic candidates say they can. The student remarked he was wondering why Edwards can't end the war in near future, because in the debate Congressman Kucinich said he would do it in three months. The answer of Edwards was more than optimistic. He responded with laying out his plans if he will be elected. He said he will send the troops out of Iraq in nine months and immediately after his election he can send at least half of 100.000 soldiers home. He also added he don't think United States can continue with their mission in Iraq. For all this he received standing ovations and popularity at least among school kids. What a shame they can't vote.

McCain believes he is better than his rivals
by Nina Gotzmannova

Senator of United States and 2008 Presidential candidate John McCain believes that he is better than his rivals from Republican Party. At least in foreign policy. On Tuesday he said that United States will be safer with him as a president. According to his own words he doesn't believe other GOP candidates have the qualifications for being a good president. He stated there is no time for how-to-be-president training after the elections and he is able to make all necessary changes right after the inauguration. His plans refer especially to U. S. foreign policy. In some aspects McCain may be right. He served as Senator in Arizona for four times and he is also a Vietnam veteran. His opponents, Rudy Giuilani, Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson have less experience in this field. For instance, Giuliani was two times elected as a Mayor of New York, but mostly worked in business sector and Romney is one-term governor of Massachusetts and venture capitalist. McCain has the most experience and most measured foreign policy program. The plans of his rivals are thin in comparison with McCain's'. McCain has clear what everything he wants to do with war in Iraq. He wants to continue and hopes people will support him. His ideas are to reach a progress in Iraq, what may take a longer time. He also added that this government is not ready to handle the pressure and only his experiences can help. If McCain will win, he will add several records to the Presidential office. He will be the oldest person to assume the Presidency and also the first President in history born outside the 50 states. McCain was born in Panama, in a U.S. territory.

Where are you Blair?
by Claudia Sonea

At the Labour Party conference this Monday, the new British Prime Minister made obvious the difference between him and Tony Blair. Dressed in a dark suit with a dark cravat keep a firm position and proved that Labour's advertising agency that coined the phrase Not Flash, Just Gordon was entirely true. He did his best in appearing as calm and relaxed like the former Prime Minister, so he opened the speech with a joke. It is hard indeed to rise to people's expectations and his cautions nature was revealed through his gag that despite the fact that received a generous ripple of applause, was more meaningful due to its substance than to its style and Hillary Burrage, a delegate from Liverpool in her 50s, confirmed it in a statement to AFP after the speech. Therefore lighthearted moments are not the best situations for Brown who handles them with a slight awkwardness. But nothing matters, because he's the long favorite of the Labour Party because of his ties with the party and the intellectual pedigree, while Blair although he was bemoaned for his lack of ideology by some activists that were alienated succeeded to win an unprecedented three elections for the party due to his approach to the people- he used to invite celebrities as guest speakers, such as U2 singer Bono, to conferences. Blair did not attend the conference because he was in New York as Middle East peace envoy. However, the new premier praised him among some others like John Smeaton, a Glasgow airport baggage handler who helped to stop an attempted car bombing just a few days after Brown become Prime Minister. Also Neil Kinnock, who led the party until 1992, was praised in the speech and despite the grin showed during Blair's memories; he managed to show only smiles this time. Brown might not be flash, but certainly knows to woo opposition voters for the upcoming election. He spoke in front of a blue backdrop, Conservative Party's colour, and stated that like all the people, even those belonging to other parties, he desires to defend and advance the British values. Until further actions from him, let's just not cry after what's gone and give the man a chance. Every person has his/her own charm. UK residents might miss Blair, but they will get accustomed with Brown, afterall both names start with the same letter, so it will be a smooth passage.
