Edwards talks tough at Clinton
by Delia Cruceru

In a four day tour bus through New Hampshire, John Edwards started criticizing his Democratic rivals, specially Hillary Rodham Clinton but without mentioning her name. In a speech at Dartmouth College he said: "Real change starts with being honest, and I want to say something again: The system in Washington is rigged, and I'll say it again, it's rigged and it's rigged by greedy powers. It's rigged by the system to favor the establishment." The former North Caroline senator condemns the Clinton era politics referring to the Lincoln Bedroom when campaign donors were allowed to stay there in the 1990s. "The American people deserve to know that their presidency is not for sale, the Lincoln Bedroom is not for rent," Edwards said. Kathleen Strand, a spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton said that these kinds of angry attacks would not improve Sen. Edwards' flagging campaign: "Sen. Clinton has the leadership and experience to make real change happen, and she has been fighting for American families for 35 years." In the tour, Edwards is traveling with his wife and their three children, letting the bus to the strains of Sheryl Crow's "A Change Will Do You Good." Asked about his comment related to the Lincoln Bedroom he replied: "I'm not holier than thou about this. I have personally raised millions of dollars as a presidential candidate. What I'm talking about is what's happened in the past through multiple administrations."

2008 campaign is top news story
by Delia Cruceru

According to a recent study released this Monday, politics attracts the U.S media's attention more than the war in Iraq. The presidential campaign became one hot subject as the rivals are involving in heavy and controversial disputes. The report by the Project for Excellence in Journalism said: "Campaign coverage that had paid more attention to Democrats than Republicans in the first three months of the year became more evenly split between the parties." The researchers examined almost every media source: 18.000 stories from 13 newspapers, eight radio outlets, five online sites, three cable-news channels and both morning and evening network newscasts. According to the report the war issues made up just fewer than 15 percent of news reports, compared to 22 percent for the first quarter. Democrats and Republicans received nearly the same coverage, 42 percent vs. 41 percent, compared to the previous quarter when the Democrats had 64 percent and the Republicans 24 percent. They said that Barack Obama had the most coverage from the Democratic camp. For the Republicans the leaders are John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, but the coverage was split among them. Other top stories were the massacre from the Virginia Tech with 5 percent and with 2 percent the Don Imus controversy, Iran and the fired U.S. attorneys. It seems that the recent drama of Paris Hilton can't be compared with the controversy of Anna Nicole Smith, not having enough coverage as the Smith's dead and disputes over her baby's custody.

Obama tries small-group politics
by Delia Cruceru

Barack Obama started to meet small groups of voters Monday. In the morning, he spoke in a restaurant from New Hampshire to eight voters and almost three times as many newspeople. "We've been blessed to have some terrific crowds at these town hall meetings, but most of the time I'm doing most of the talking and not doing enough listening," Obama said in Hanover. Among his voters was a medical student that was asked by Barock Obama about the health care, a businessman asked about medical insurance and then he quizzed a recent college grad on the job market. It was a different meeting as he was used to crowded halls and public, but in here he founded intimacy. One support of his, Maggie North of Claremont, told him that if he continues to be dragged to well-publicized disputes with rivals he will risk becoming a usual part of the political scene. "You can be it. But you've got to stop â€" excuse me for being blunt â€" you've got to stop getting involved in the way people are fighting each other, chewing you up a little more," Maggie North said. A Republican National Committee spokeswoman, Amber Wilkerson, said that Barack Obama's characterization of the presidential campaign shows he's unfit to lead. "Unfortunately for Barack Obama, this campaign is not a fraternity hazing ritual, and Americans are not going to elect a rookie politician who has ditched his 'politics of hope' mantra and gone on the attack now that he's dropping in the polls," Wilkerson said.

Another President- warrior?
by Claudia Sonea

Barack Obama, the democratic presidential contender, after realizing what a terrible mistake he did, saying that will enter by force in Pakistan to catch al-Qaida members if President Pervez Musharraf will not take more drastically measures. Still he maintained that although Americans have been acting in good faith and sent millions of dollars to Pakistan like ally; they did not take any aggressive action in dealing al-Qaida. Bush was more evasive is answering if the White House shares Obama's views, but confirmed they will continue to send money to aid in combating militants. The candidate to USA presidential elections is a warrior and his foreign policy is to switch the battle field from Iraq to Pakistan and gave as an example of lost opportunity when Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld called-off a raid against al-Qaida leaders in 2005 because it would have ment a violation of Pakistabi territories. This was his only open attack to Bush administration. A spokesman of Musharraf's government said that they will not impose a state of emergency disturbing the order at the Afghan border that was already established with difficulties. Also minister of state for information, Tariq Azim, stated that action against militants in northwestern border areas ended with the loss of many soldiers. He mentioned that statements coming from the United States like that of Obama are upsetting Pakistani public and made them restless. Besides starting wars, the democratic presidential contender cleans houses. He is the fourth presidential candidate to participate to a program sponsored by the service-workers' union and implies to help a home health care worker to clean a house. Who knows reason might hit him and realize there is much to solve in his own country, without having to go abroad.

Rudy Giuliani wants to move from Mayor to President next year
by Corina Ciubotaru

The presidential elections are next year in America, and Rudy Giuliani is one of the candidates. I don't know much about the man, but it seems to me that anyone who can run a city like New York, with millions of the most varied residents ever encountered, can do a good job at the head of the United States. He had his own radio show after he got elected mayor and he gave people advice on the most varied topics, so he is one that cares for his people and their well-being. He seems not afraid to speak his mind and this is something I think is necessary for a leader, especially if he leads of the most powerful country in the world. He would probably enforce strict security policies; he had a weapons control program in New York when he was mayor, so he realizes the importance of domestic safety. And even though he is accused by his opponents of not taking seriously some aspects of the 9/11 tragedy, he is still the man who wasn't scared when faced with the tragedy, who appeared on TV and comforted frightened Americans and who did a good and fast job of getting the city back on track. He is used to having his life analyzed and criticized so he won't be surprised when the entire world starts commenting on every external politics move he makes. I know he uses 9/11 as his main argument and that he has no experience with external relations, but he has a good chance of being the right-minded President the U.S. need right now.

Candidates seek opposite gender's votes
by Delia Cruceru

Candidates for the presidential seat are looking towards to opposite gender for votes. The Democrat Hillary Clinton and the Republican Fred Thompson seek to enchant people to vote them. The former actor from "Law and Order" and former Tennessee senator, Fred Thompson according to a recent Associated Press-Ipsos polling 68 percent of his support is from male voters. The former first lady and New York senator, Hillary Clinton has 63 percent of her support from female voters, according to Associated Press-Ipsos survey she has more than twice the female backing of her nearest rival, Sen. Barack Obama. According to figures from recent national elections the majority of GOP voters are men, who tend to be more conservative than women, while just over half of Democratic voters are female. "She can certainly win the nomination based on her support with women. But at the end of the day for the general election, she needs to make sure she can get her fair share of votes among swing men as well," said Democratic pollster Geoff Garin about Hillary Clinton. According to the polls for June and July, Clinton has the support of 41 percent of women and the backing of 26 percent of men.

Sunnis vs. Shiites in Iraq is all about who holds the power
by Corina Ciubotaru

Ever wondered what the difference is between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and what is the true reason for all this fighting? Both the Sunnis and the Shiites have the three main doctrines: the oneness of God, the belief in the revelations of Muhammad and the resurrection on the Day of Judgment. The Sunnis have established a set of rules called Shari'a, while the Shiites developed an organizational system long after. The Sunnis represent 90% of the Islam adherents, which is why we've heard of them more. The Shiites are the partisans of Muhammad's son in law Ali more than Muhammad's and they are not a united group. They represent the majority in Iran and 56% of Muslims in Iraq, so the numbers don't seem to favor any cult in the country. The Shiites may be regarded as the faction of the underdogs and have caused many rebellions across the Islamic world, as their war against Sunnis is all about gaining power, in Iraq at least. Whatever American forces are trying to accomplish there, their goal to establish a democracy is beginning to look impossible. The best way to make peace last in a divided country like that is to bring all the people together and make their lives connected somehow, so that keeping the peace is in everyone's best interest. This has been attempted in Iraq by forming a government where Sunni and Shiite ministers can work together for the benefit of their countrymen, but the end-result so far is that Sunni representatives have left the administration. No unity in this case, and no peace.

Opposition triumphed in Lebanon
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

The candidate sustained by the leader of the Christian opposition in Lebanon, Micheal Aoun won the partial elections for the two deputy chairs which had remained unoccupied after the death of two members of the Parliament. The elections were organized in Metn, near Beirut According to the official results published Sunday after midnight, the FPM candidate, Camille Khoury obtained 39.534 votes, while the ex President Amil Gemayel(whose sustainers filed an "official complaint concerning the results"), got only 39.116 votes. Prime Minister Fouad Siniora declared that the votes were a civilized response to political assassination. Pierre Gemayel and Walid Eido are the latest victims in a growing trend of anti-Syrians to be killed on the streets of Beirut. International condemnation was spread after the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in 2005. The news is very difficult to comment because you'd have to talk about a whole different culture which you can't possibly understand without feeling it. Just like anti-Syrians or anti-Semitic people can't understand how we can possibly tolerate to stand next to them, we can't understand these conflicts and these atrocities. I can't picture a way this hateful war will ever end.

Sarkozy loses his temper
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy well known for his habit of losing his temper did it again. Sunday afternoon, Sarkozy and his companions were heading for open water in a boat on Lake Winnipesauke. The President spotted Associated Press photographer Jim Cole and freelancer Vince DeWitt aboard the first's boat. Before observing the photographers, Sarkozy was very happy and was smiling and waving at the security people. His nice expression and manners vanished in a second when he saw the two and he began moving in their direction. Wearing only swim trucks he jumped in the Jim Cole's boat and began shouting at them in French. They didn't understand a word and asked someone to translate them, but this happened only after the altercation was over. After the two assured the President they're done photographing for the day, Sarkozy returned to his party in his boat followed by another boat carrying U.S. Secret Service agents. Everyone has the right to privacy and we should all respect that. On the other hand monsieur Sarkozy is well aware this is almost impossible for a person in his position and he should defend his right in a rather diplomatic way, not by shouting and jumping in photographers boats. The French Government had nothing to comment on this subject. What could they have commented?

Caroline Giuliani's Facebook profile
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

I wonder if it would hurt us to leave people alone. I'm talking about public persons who are always pressured to talk about their private life, about their family and friends. When it comes to a pop star who wants publicity from this sort of "journalism" you can expect to anything and it doesn't even matter that much. On the other hand when relatives of politicians are the ones in question, without them wanting to be something is wrong. Is there nothing left to write about Rudy Giuliani or his campaign? Do papers really need to write about his 17 year old daughter? The media shouts Giuliani's daughter signaled herself "supporting Democrat Barack Obama, then backed off when faced with questions." How did this "breaking news" get to the media? The teenager has like many other teenagers a Facebook profile. Caroline Giuliani listed herself as a member of Obama's Facebook group, "Barack Obama". Journalists flocked to question Rudolph Giuliani about this topic. His statement needs to be appreciated because he doesn't want to bring his children in the media attention. He said he loves his daughter very much and he is very proud of her and that is all there counts, leaving everyone interested in this news to stare stupidly at Caroline Giuliani's Facebook profile.

Obama criticizes Clinton over lobbyists
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Barack Obama, a hopeful democratic presidential criticises the fact that lobbyists have been in Washington for too long, aiming directly at his main rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama rushed to point on Saturday's bloggers forum in Chicago that he will never take money from lobbyists to support his campaign, while Clinton argued, stating that takeing money from lobbyists who are real people with real interest is acceptable. Obama refused to even pronounce Clinton's name, stateing only : "I profoundly disagree with her statements". Obama has taken money from lobbyists registered in his home state of Illinois, some of whom have federal interests. When lobbyists registered in Washington have given money to his campaign, he has returned it. He said he accepts that lobbyists have a legitimate role in Washington, but he said they now hold too much power. Mark Daley, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign in Iowa, called Obama's comments "disappointing" and noted the money he's taken from lobbyists in Illinois and elsewhere. "I think that if you don't think lobbyists have too much influence in Washington, then I believe you've probably been in Washington too long," said Obama. He also stated that without a change of culture in Washington such things as the health care reform will not be possible.
