Will it finally pass?
by Barbora Misakova
It is already a year from controversial Obama’s health legislation and tomorrow this long time period could be ended. Objections went not only from the side of Republicans but also from some undecided Democrats. Even though there is only about 9 Democrats who voted “nay”, it is questioning if the Obama’s final product will persuade them to support it. But there is also possibility that lawmakers would be afraid of getting the flip-flopper label when they switch their vote after a year of pros and cons debate. According to Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, it will have to happen as it is necessary to round up the votes to pass the Senate’s version of! the legislation with a package of Obama’s changes. Changes were designed to make the Senate bill more palatable to House Democrats. Making changes that would suit everyone is more than difficult. Obama will probably come with ideas that at least have the fingerprints of Republicans. Question if is it going to help him, is hardly to answer as Republicans who want Obama to tear up the existing bills and start over. Pelosi will need 216 votes. But counting with all the Democrats who voted “yes” in November is little bit risky. Some of the top targets may be the nine lawmakers that are undecided or undeclared. Three of them are retiring and five others are freshmen. One of the freshmen is Frank Kratovil, whose spokesman said: “It’s still sort of up-in-the-air right now. If the bill that comes back to the House looks anything like the first bill, he’ll vote against it.” As Press secretary Robert Gibbs said: “I don’t doubt th! at he will … do the same thing this time to get the vote! s necess ary.”
