What makes us women?
by Barbora Misakova
Eight March is every year celebrated as International Women’s Day – a major day of global celebration of women. This celebration was political event of Socialists in the past, but now it lost its political flavor and it is just a day when men can express their love for women. But many times it is neither about love nor respect, but about silly jokes just like our male politicians showed. Why is that? Is it because women are still more and more independent? Or is it because they are not as easily frightened as in the past? Or is it because men are afraid of losing their leading positions? I don’t want to start any feministic discussion, I just think the ori! ginal meaning of this day is already gone. Just like the women celebrated in the past. While France 24 sees in two French female politicians an example of emancipated women which should be celebrated, I see (at least in one) a person struck by political life full of men. Nadine Morano, secretary of state for families, came to Neuves-Maison establishment where the clients were smoking cigarettes. When she told the owner to stop them, he just answered: “If I played by the rules, I would long ago have been forced to shut up shop.” Morano busted a café and went straight to the local police station and told the gendarmes to enforce the ban. As she said for local daily L’Est Republique: “I am a minister of the republic. If I went into a bar (where people are smoking) and did nothing, I would be condoning this illegal activity.” If it was just Morano’s offended pride or real devotion to french law, is hard to say. The truth is I would hardl! y could give a flower or show any devotion to such a woman, ev! en on th e Women’s Day…
