Obama slightly rebuked about his human rights actions
by Zuzana Zelenakova

On Thursday, US President Barrack Obama is about to accept his Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, which has been a source of puzzlement and controversy around the globe ever since the news reached the public. According to the Nobel committee 48-year-old US president was awarded for “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people,” however, both Republicans and Democrats questioned whether he deserved it. Republicans have claimed he won more due to his personal charisma and rhetorical skills than actual achievements in area of human rights and peace campaigning. Only a day before accepting the prize two human rights organizati! ons, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, expressed their mixed feelings about Obama´s advocating of human rights. When it comes to foreign policy Barrack Obama is willing to talk to countries that his predecessor George W. Bush simply denied. However, being, let´s say, obliging and pragmatic sometimes prevent a person to express his true opinion on human rights matters in countries like China fully and freely. Although President Obama raised concerns about human rights record of the country during his last visit to China the message was not as sharp or forceful as the one given by President Clinton in 1998. "It was a missed opportunity," said Phelim Kine, a spokesman for the group Human Rights Watch. "He failed to address some of the most specific and visceral human rights abuses going on in China." On the other hand, the two human rights organizations praise Obama´s swift handling of the closure of the Guantanamo Bay military prison and his diploma! tic approach towards the Muslim world. According to the Amnest! y Intern ational and Human Rights Watch officials President Obama should use his award acceptance speech for emphasizing that his "policy of dialogue with unsavory regimes will not weaken America's voice for human rights."
