Celebrating Freedom by Claudia Sonea

Freedom is a controversial word. According to the dictionary it refers to the quality of being free of restraints, yet Rousseau in his treatise called “The Social Contract” states that : 'Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains’. We are all born free, but as we grow up restraints are imposed by society, by common sense, our own perception of things. Adam and Eve were the first people who showed that there is no such thing like freedom. They were allowed to do anything with the exception of eating apples from the tree of knowledge. Ambiguous as the word may be, freedom is also very important and history of mankind is based on the struggle for freedom. The fights for independence or for a country’s unification and sovereignty are in fact fights for being from the constraints imposed by others- it is a collective freedom. Germany celebrated on November the 9th one of the most important fights for the freedom o! f a nation: the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1961, the communist regime of oppression built the Berlin Wall to separate not only West Germany from East Germany, but also Western Europe from Eastern Bloc. The Soviet Union controlled the Eastern Bloc and tried to indoctrinate the people with communism. However the need for freedom was more powerful than anything and Germans stood up for their freedom, for a right that they were born with. EU leaders, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the ceremony held at the Berlin Wall in the presence of thousands of people. It was a moment of joy, a moment of sorrow for those who lost their lives trying to cross over wall in an attempt to return to the idealistic state of being free. Blessed are the nations that enjoy democratic regimes and celebrate freedom as a right with which no one can temper. Unfortunately! , 21 century doesn't present leaders with a better perception ! of freed om, but leaders who break blatantly the right all people are born with in order to fulfil their dreams of power. How come people accept that nowadays? Ukrainians should answer the question as they are the most appropriate to speak of martial law and stolen freedom.
