Last few days of near-normalcy for Barack Obama
by Martina Janeckova
Barack Obama seems to be enjoying his last few days of near-normalcy. After winning the presidency on Nov. 4, Obama has tried to spend more time with family than while campaigning for nearly two years. Nowadays he wakes up in his own bed, goes to the gym, returns to his house in Hyde Park to shower and change, and goes to the office, where he spends several hours before returning home. The future president and first lady still go to their favorite Italian restaurant, Spiaggia. Obama plans a family vacation in Hawaii, as usual, over the Christmas holiday. Last week he was seen dropping his daughters Malia and Sasha at school. But on Halloween he got angry when journalists captured him walking down a Chicago street with Sasha in costume. Inevitably, Obama's normal life is vanishing. He travels in a motorcade, surrounded by Secret Service agents, enters and exits buildings under heavy protection. He is not coming to his favorite Hyde Park Hair Salon & Barber Shop anymore and now the barber comes to the home of one of Obama's friends. Even such things as picking a puppy for his daughters play out before cameras and are discussed at a news conference. Obama said in a recent phone conversation overheard by reporters on his plane that he was not going to spend too much time in Washington over the next several weeks. But on Jan. 20 he will become president and move his family into the White House, where almost nothing will be the same and for next four years his life will certainly not be his own.
