Powell endorses Obama
by Martina Janeckova
On Sunday, Oct 19 Colin Powell, a Republican, former Secretary of State and retired general endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president. He said: “I think we need a transformational figure. I think we need a president who is a generational change and that's why I'm supporting Barack Obama, not out of any lack of respect or admiration for Sen. John McCain.” He added that either senator is qualified to be commander in chief, but he concluded that Obama is better suited than McCain to handle nation’s economic problems and help improve its world standing. Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain’s campaign, his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a candidate for vice-president and their decision to focus on Obama’s ties to 1960s-era radical William Ayers. Powell said that “Palin is very distinguished woman, and she’s to be admired. But at the same time, now that we have had a chance to watch her for some seven weeks, I don’t believe she’s ready to be president of the United States, which is the job of the vice president.” McCain seemed contemptuous of Powell’s endorsement, saying he had support from 4 other former secretaries of State: Henry Kissinger, James A. Baker III, Lawrence Eagleburger and Alexander Haig. Obama’s spokesman Robert Gibbs said that Obama called Powell to thank him for endorsement. At a meeting in Fayetteville, N. C. Obama added that “he is honored to have support of Colin Powell and that this is the moment where we all need to come together as one nation- young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Republican and Democrat.”
