Every vote is a good vote
by Barbora Misakova
Presidential elections are getting more thrilling and candidates are word for word fighting for every single voter. And to be honest, I am not so surprised at all. But on the other hand it is a bit funny where the votes are looking for. Obama and McCain are both trying to persuade new Hispanic citizens about their loyalty, experiences and their political program, which is, of course, the best of the best for their new country. Just the picture of long queue of immigrants waiting on their new American citizenship and the immediate "attack" from democratic and republican volunteers makes me laugh. Imagine that you are waiting on this day so long. You live in the US for many years, you raised two or three children, they all are attending probably high school somewhere in the states, but you still were not the real American. You cannot vote, you cannot make decisions about the matters of the U.S. like other people with citizenship could, you were just still in the position of immigrant. And now, in this magical and historical moment for you and your family, you are bothered by these volunteers who are saying about their candidate and about your new duty & to vote! (And of course, it would be the best if you could vote for their candidate)
Now a little bit statistic data. While in 2004 there were 4 million foreign-born Hispanics citizens of voting age, these days the number is even bigger! Now we are talking about more than 5 million of those who can decide to which candidate they want to give their vote. Even though most of them look like they would rather prefer Barack Obama, nothing is for sure. Some of them, especially the older ones are looking more on McCain and his experiences. On one hand Obama can end the war on the other hand McCain can speak and have some kind of authority which Obama doesn't have. But when there is a question of age, Obama is winner & he is younger, he has more energy and he can rule the U.S. longer than McCain who has his age. Both candidates, McCain and Obama are spending lot of money to bilingual advertising than any previous campaign, and they also spend very impressive amount on Hispanic outreach. Even though it is not so clear who could win among Hispanic citizens, it is more than clear, that their votes can still shuffle the cards. So let's see how it all will finally end.
