Chris Cantell Discusses Politics: Democratic National Convention 2008
by Martina Janeckova
On Monday August 25 the Democratic National Convention, a week of political speechmaking is starting. Obama said on Sunday, August 24 that he would like to persuade middle-class voters to support him as a candidate for the White House. He said he hoped people would conclude, “He’s sort of like us. He comes from a middle-class background, went to school on scholarships. He and his wife had to figure out child care and how to start a college fund for their kids.” The opening night will feature Michelle Obama, whose remarks should present her husband as anything but elite. Clinton’s speech will be a centerpiece of Tuesday’s session. Clinton outpolled Obama among working-class voters in many states through winter and spring. The republican presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign prepared a television commercial suggesting Obama had insulted Clinton when he picked Delaware Senator Joseph Biden as his vice presidential running mate. But Clinton praised Biden’s selection and her spokeswoman noted that Clinton “has said repeatedly that Barack Obama and she share a commitment to changing the direction of the country, getting us out of Iraq and expanding access to health care. John McCain doesn’t. It’s interesting how those remarks didn’t make it into his ad.” A recent NBC-Wall Street Journal survey indicated that only half of those who voted for Clinton are now supporting Obama, while about 20 percent are backing McCain. Being aware of that, Obama agreed to allow Clinton’s name to be placed in nomination on Wednesday night. Barack Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and Michelle Obama's older brother, Craig Robinson, also will have roles in the convention.
