Obama dismisses conservative criticism
by Michaela Vargova

The likely Democratic nominee Barack Obama dismissed conservative criticism Friday over a comment he made about Americans' lack of foreign language skills. Most of Americans speak only one language, which is very sad, mainly in comparison to immigrants who in general master at least two foreign languages. Obama prompts people to realize how important is a knowledge – not only of a foreign language but also of any kind of skills. Obama made a clean breast of that even he can't speak a foreign language, which he consider as embarrassing. And also therefore he thinks the new generation should be lead to gain more knowledge and so be able to compete with Europeans. With that pronouncement he came in for disdain from conservatives and groups advocating English as the official U.S. language. His remark has also caused buzz on the Internet and talk radio.
The Obama campaign on Friday also battled away McCain's and Republican Party's logions that Obama polled for an increase of income taxes even on individuals who earn $32,000. Disputative is Obama's vote on a budget resolution in March that called for an expire of President Bush's tax cuts. Such a step would have allowed tax rates to return to pre-2001 levels, which means that an individual with taxable income of about $32,000 would have faced a tax increase. Democrats have constantly called for an end to Bush's tax cuts, but many, also including the likely nominee Obama, have proposed to replace them with tax cuts aimed at lower- and middle-income taxpayers.
