Obama changed his mind
by Livia Cseresova
On Monday, American presidential candidate Barack Obama suggested using the strategic oil reserve to lower the prices of gas in the United States, what opposed his earlier attitude. Obama also called his rival, John McCain, a tool of large oil companies as increasing costs of energy became a key issue in the presidential campaign.
Obama revealed the steps intended to end the dependence of U.S. on oil imported from Venezuela and the Middle East within 10 years. He proposed freeing 70 million barrels of light oil from the U.S. stockpile of emergency.
The light oil might later be replaced with heavier to bring fast relief from high prices of gasoline, according to Obama.
John McCain now criticized Obama’s opposition to nuclear power and offshore drilling and called on him and Congress to go to Washington from their holidays and attempt to work out the energy problems.
McCain believes that "Anybody who says that we can achieve energy independence without using and increasing these existing energy resources either doesn't have the experience to meet the challenges we face or isn't giving the American people straight talk."
Recent polls show that McCain has erased national lead of Obama. For American voters the U.S. economy, including increasing prices of gas, is one of the most important issues in most of the polls.
Senator from Illinois, Obama, noted in his new TV commercial that his rival was in the pocket of oil companies. In the advertisement, there is a picture of McCain with G. Bush and it says that "After one president in the pocket of big oil - we can't afford another," it says.
The group around McCain claims that the ad didn’t mention McCain opposed a 2005 energy bill providing billions in tax breaks for energy producers and Obama voted for the bill. McCain, too, blasted Obama's proposal on the strategic oil reserve, saying that just few weeks ago he claimed that it should be used only for real emergencies.
Obama now believes that oil companies should at first focus on drilling on 68 million acres to which they can access but never touched, and explore other options. And McCain demanded opening new areas of U.S. coastline to offshore oil drilling, which is supported by a majority of Americans, as polls show, and nuclear power.
