Obama and McCain continuing their dispute over the Iraq war
by Martina Janeckova
On Tuesday, July 15 2008, the two major presidential candidates sharpened their dispute over the Iraq war. Democratic Senator Barack Obama called it a costly distraction that must end while Republican Senator John McCain said United States must win this war. Obama said that USA must focus on defeating the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan. McCain agreed to the importance of this but he stressed that prevailing in Iraq is very important. The two men also discussed the situation in Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden and his men are thought to be hiding. Currently Obama is going to an overseas trip that will include stops in Iraq and Afghanistan. There were also several polls about whether Obama would be a good commander in chief or not. A Washington Post poll showed the country is evenly divided; McCain, who was a Vietnam prisoner of war and has a long Senate experience with defense issues, was viewed favorably too. An AP-Yahoo poll showed that 39 percent of those surveyed said McCain would handle the Iraq situation better compared with 33 percent for Obama. Obama said he stands by his longtime proposal to withdraw U. S. combat troops. McCain said Obama should travel overseas and talk to General David Petraeus, the overall commander on the ground, first and then present his strategy. Obama sketched a foreign policy for a new administration and stressed that ending of war in Iraq was essential. McCain’s campaign for the day was economy, but he decided to react and said that “the next president will inherit a situation in Iraq in which enemies are on the run and American soldiers are coming home.”
