Abandoning the public financing
by Claudia Sonea

Every campaign needs money to support it, up to this point nothing new. Yet, what might come as a shock to many US residents is that Barack Obama has switch from lobbying for public financing to try to raise money on his own. Let us pray not to get again to a Watergate scandal.
Obama vowed last year to get to an agreement with the Republican nominee to not give up the publicly financed general election. Surprisingly, after he won Hilary, he did not seem that convinced to keep his word given and although his lawyer talked to McCain’s lawyer there were no negotiations on the previously mentioned matter. In fact Robert Bauer, Obama’s lawyer, and Potter, McCain’s lawyer, approached the subject of the public financing issue for 45 minutes, but got to no conclusion and there was no negotiation.
No matter who thinks his call was a mistake, Obama will release on Thursday his first commercial of the general election campaign that will last 60 minutes and contain a short biography. He succeeded up to now to raise record sums from private sources, much more than the $85 million in public money. He confesses that in spite of appearing as a hypocrite the decision was not easily taken and the cause for it was the fact that the system of public financing is broken and needs to be changed because offers some advantage to those who know how to master the system. On Friday, Obama will give May fundraising report to the Federal Election Commission.
Bush has also rejected public financing in 2000, but that of primaries, not general; therefore Obama is the first one to do such a thing since the approval of the law of presidential finance system.
