Democratic Primaries
by Claudia Sonea

Now it is time to see weather the future Democratic candidate at the presidential elections will be a woman or not. On the Super Tuesday of 2008 (the Tuesday in February or March of a presidential election year when the majority of states organize primary elections to select delegates that will later on be officially nominated at a national convention) the long fight of 14-month held between Barack Obama and if Hillary Rodham Clinton took an determinant turn. Primaries held in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island had as top issues the economy, the North American Free Trade Agreement and others. After 11-straight losses to Obama since February 5, Clinton can still hope to maintain her candidacy and get in the final round for presidency? She can because she won Ohio and Texas and split the votes with Obama in Rhode Island and Vermont. Even her husband, his most supportive fan, said that her campaign can go on with the largest states on her side. However, it is still premature to rejoice because there are seven more weeks until Pennsylvania will vote on 22 April and the odds are against her due to Obama's existing hundred-plus delegate lead. Nevertheless, all her struggle faced steep odds, but she was resistant and went on despite humiliations from her adversary (some that once where close friends and supporters), the impatience of small donors who contributed $35 million. By laying the stress on the lack of national security of Obama and the fact that he is not yet prepared to be commander in chief, Clinton hopes to get through the final elections and face the Republican nominee (most probably McCain as he already won the primaries). It would mean a great deal for a woman to take command of the most powerful country. She wants to become first women elected President of US and I surely wish she manages, not only because she deserves it as being one of the strongest character I have ever seen, but also because it would mean a step forwards for all the women in the world. Good luck!
