East Timor's President Shot
by Zuzana Krskova

Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timor's president, has been put into an induced coma, after a daring assassination attempt by rebel soldiers. Mr. Ramos-Horta was shot in his stomach in a pre- dawn attack on his Dili home, and airlifted to the northern Australian city of Darwin Monday for emergency medical treatment. Two cars drew up to Mr. Horta's house, two kilometers outside the capital Dili, at about 6am, before dawn and the occupants opened fire. Guards returned fire and the attackers fled.Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao was targeted in a separate incident, but was unharmed, described events as a coup attempt. He also declared a 48- hour state of emergency, including a night- time curfew.Rebel leader of the coordinated assassination attempts, Alfredo Reinado and another rebel died in the attack on Mr. Ramos- Horta. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd declares his country will send police and military to reinforce its 800- strong contingent to the International Stabilization Force. He also pledged to send more peacekeepers to East Timor."The security situation is currently assessed as stable but this could change quickly as events unfold" said Mr. Rudd"This comes as a total surprise given the recent positive developments, as a result of the president's tireless efforts to find a mechanism of national political consensus to find solutions to the critical issues that are faced by our country," said Mari Alkatiri, prime minister until 2006.New Zealand also has to put additional troops on standby.
