Schwarzenegger will endorse McCain

Senator John McCain joined Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday to promote the California governor's November ballot initiatives. They are going to appear at a news conference after touring a Los Angeles-based solar energy company and the governor will make his endorsement official, his senior aides confirmed. At the Oakland event, the crowd seemed to be enthusiastic as an audience at a game show, applauding at all the right spots, frequently nodding their head in agreement, and chanting "four more years" as Schwarzenegger arrived. Steve Shcmidt, a senior McCain adviser who managed Schwarzenegger's 2006 campaign, said "Governor Schwarzenegger is an exceptional governor and we are honored that he has decided to endorse Senator McCain, and look forward to the event tomorrow." McCain, a possible candidate for U.S. president in 2008, is running strongly ahead of all three rivals in California. He said he had always favored town hall meetings open to the public, adding that some especially noisy dissenters had occasionally been ejected. "The benefit of an open town hall meeting is one that you get to hear a lot of different views, and two it has credibility," he said. After having appeared with the governor earlier in the day at a Burbank hotel, McCain, who has fought for campaign finance reform, said Schwarzenegger's extensive fund raising "played by the rules of the game." He continued: "Do I like the game? No. But for him to tie one hand behind his back, I would not think would be particularly appropriate." Schwarzenegger is not going to make an endorsement in the GOP primary. "It doesn't help me, and it doesn't help the state of California." He is now up for re-election next year He is fighting an uphill battle on his favored measures in the special election that he called for next month.
